I manoeuvre through going to Forum then on New Posts. Easy enough to get back there if you post or follow other links. Nolic

Moh, easy to do - my fault is clicking the member's name instead of the last post icon!

Nolic, do the Newshound posts appear in the New Posts?

I've just added some pics to the Morris Minor thread and this bumped it up the forum list. Mrs Tiz saw me doing it and she said she didn't even know there was a Morris thread, she hadn't seen it, yet she's an avid reader of OG (albeit a lurker!).

Moh, I do the same thing quite often! And yes, you're right Tiz, if I think a well subscribed topic is slipping down the list I revive it by making a post. Easy for good topics to miss a response for a day or two and if they aren't breathed on they can die.
I'll say it again, Newshound is as much use as a chocolate teapot, it's just clutter as far as I'm concerned. Also, I think it has an agenda, I don't like these spurious polls and competitions.

The `Old-fashioned jokes' topic is in a separate forum too and that disappears too fast! I've been bookmarking such topics in my browser to make it easier to find them.

When I first found the site again it took me to a page which says 404 not found, how do I get the forum page to come on first please?

Moh, by default the site will open on the Portal Page. If you want it to open on the Forum Page you will need to go to that page and bookmark it in your browser. You could also make that page your homepage if that is what you want.

Moh, I'll just add a question to what Ian said to give us a bit more idea what's happening.
You open your browser and then what....how do you normally reach the site?

Moh, I know I'm leapfrogging Tiz but if you look at the drop down menus at the top of your browser you'll find one that has 'preferences'. If you get OG up on the page and then go to preferences you'll find a commend marked 'home page'. There is an option in there 'use current page'. Whatever you have on the screen, in this case OG, the browser will go straight to that page as soon as you click to go online. If you normally have Google as your default home page (many people do) you don't loose anything because your browser heading stays on the page and you can access Google from there. What has happened if you get '404' is that your browser has tried to access one of the archive pages that is not indexed yet.

I have OG in my favourites list, so I just click on that and it takes me to the 404 page which was the first page that appeared when I clicked on that at first after the new site came about. I have Virgin Media as my home page as my emails are opened from there.

Does Newshound have to hog the active topic page? It pushes other topics off so quickly.

Looks like newshound is appearing in recent topics , but its not too bad around 10% of recent activity , was more when visitbarnoldswick started up but now as that is only getting a couple of post a day that is all thats being replicated here, and the posts are of local interest.

You just need to re-bookmark the new site, whichever page suits you the best.

Ok will do but I expect it will drop to the bottom of a very long list.

I don't know which browser you are using Moh but once bookmarked you should be able to click the bookmark once and hold (grab) and drag it to wherever you like in the list. You can certainly do this in Firefox.

Moh, learning something new every day assures us that our brains are still active! Good anti-Altzheimer's therapy!

Thanks for that Ian it worked a treat and I was able to reorganise the list to move the most used ones up.

I have read all your comments and agree with you all that it's far from satisfactory, I will remove all news hound postings from the active, recent, unread lists etc, this should clear the way for actual postings by members. Also I propose to create a default listing based on "Unread Postings" which will show you everything that's changed since your last visit, ensuring that you do not miss anything.

I am also thinking about introducing a drop down menu under the main header with all the various functions that the software offers, rather than searching the pages for various links to click on.

Oops battery's going on my laptop, I'll continue this thread later...

Re. Doc's post. Isn't is marvellous that we have Doc working for us for nothing. Non-donors should reflect on this.
Doc, have you talked to number two daughter yet?

If the non Donors click on the adverts every once in a while, they'll probably earn their keep, especially as we get our name in lights for a solitary quid. My insignificant personal site pays for the hosting by people following links on there. Sometimes its a couple of quid for one click (OK, more often its 5p or less).

Pluggy, problem is that the return is yet to be proved. Doc has an open mind on the adverts till he sees what the return is. I see donations more as an expression of support for the site than simply financing it. It demonstrates thought for the work that lies behind it. As far as I'm concerned Doc should put any surplus in his back pocket, he's paid enough out of there in the past to keep us going.

I just looked at a site called 'gransnet' and gave thanks that I still have this place to amuse myself. They have loads of posters and threads, but for instance - someone was complaining about not putting the trollies back at Tesco. Good grief....

Never mind the width - feel the quality.

That was what triggered Doc to put Oneguy up in 2004. You should have seen the old Barlick site! Kids slagging each other off and that was it!
