And definitely no religion .

Busy busy day, cleaning , washing, setting up school Christmas fayre, meal out, wine tasting and just put the last load of washing on whilst I have a drink before bed, a drink of tea that is :laugh5: no time to think about politics and do I want to. No! Now we are in to the post election analysis. Roll on Christmas

Today I shall be watching for family news and aiming to get in the shed for an hour.
Apart from that, enduring the darkest days of the year, very depressing! Security light in back yard was triggering at 14:30 yesterday....
Vacuuming done and dry washing dealt with. A sit down with a cup of tea and then the engine.

Washing to finish, a bit or ironing then a days sewing. I shall finish Bobs shirt up to the collar, then tackle the yellow one. Maxine has sent me an idea that may work.

No, I just fancied making a man’s shirt, a bit of a personal challenge. Bob chose the fabric to reflect his interest in astronomy. I never realised that fitting a man’s shirt on the shoulder and collar could be so difficult. Now I look at every shirt I see being worn and I am amazed how many don’t fit properly. I have become a bit of an expert on collar style too .

Not my prowess the apostrophe being a mere illiterate scientist :laugh5: but ownership I can do and am proud of , especially the theses of both my daughters😆, ( hope you get the double meaning of what I am proud of ) .

Today is a sewing day, Bob is out at the Santa Special with the model railway. I shall tackle the possible solution to the yellow top this morning, then put some braising steak in the slow cooker, ready for a warming tea when Bob gets in. Its going to be cold out there. I shall pop down at 1.30 to see Claire,Adam and Erin, then back home to the warmth.

Making a place in the garden for Millie then litterpicking the Santa Fun Run. Sally and the grandchildren will be filling the bags and I will run round in the car and scoop them up.

Our Jack is coming up to help clear a space in the front garden. He will make shorter work of the hole as well.

We used to bury the pets in the garden as well Ian. If you look at the base of the thorn tree to the right and behind Shireen you can see a cross nailed to the tree (1976). They all went in there. The Kids asked for the cross as a marker.
Aiming for useful work in the shed on the engine. Otherwise keeping upright on our walks and also keeping warm. The new long sleeved triple force Damart vests are just the ticket for this weather! (Being two sizes to large is no problem at all, in fact I think they work better for not being tight.)

Our pets were buried in the garden too, cats, hamsters, gerbils, fish, and later the ashes of cats spread in their favourite spots such as under the plum tree (We ran out of space to bury them!) .

Today was hairdressers this morning, sewing all afternoon and art tonight. Bob’s shirt is progressing well, and I am nearly at the collar stage and hence a long wait until late January. Today my buttons arrived. They are ivory and grey, mottled each looking a bit like a planet. I have been searching for ages and managed to get 20 from ebay for £2.99. Excellent value.

A very different but wonderful concert at Colne Muni last night with Robert Plant and his band Saving Grace. Largely arrangements of 20's and 30's American Bluegrass music.
Meeting a friend for a walk along the canal this morning, then History Society Xmas meeting tonight. We are putting a load of maps and old plans on display....should be good!

No, but he did joke about the leather trousers he was wearing. Not looking bad for a seventy year old, his hair is still long and curly and his voice is excellent.

Shirt finished except the collar button holes and buttons. I was on a roll yesterday. I have loved making this but oh all those fell seams and top stitching! If I was paid by the hour even on a basic wage this shirt would cost over £200 . The things you do for love :laugh5:

Another day at home, beautiful morning, but Bob isn’t fit to go walking . He has a terrible chesty cold, caught at the U3A lunch last Thursday. He was sat next to Denise, who turned up to wine tasting on Friday with a chesty cold. She must have been at her most infectious on Thursday. I shall however go and collect our bimonthly prescriptions from the chemist and call and see a friend who has just had a shoulder replacement. Bob had best not go with me.

The rest of the day will be spent unpicking and remaking the dreaded yellow top, before the last pilates session of the year. Yesterdays session was rounded off with a glass of Baileys and mince pies. People had turned up in festive hats and jumpers. It was fun. I do like my pilates and yoga sessions there, its always fun. Exercise with fun is definitely the way to go.

Just for you Sue.... 'The Song of the Shirt by Thomas Hood.

Image

With fingers weary and worn,
With eyelids heavy and red,
A woman sat in unwomanly rags,
Plying her needle and thread—
Stitch! stitch! stitch!
In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch
She sang the "Song of the Shirt."

"Work! work! work!
While the cock is crowing aloof!
And work—work—work,
Till the stars shine through the roof!
It's O! to be a slave
Along with the barbarous Turk,
Where woman has never a soul to save,
If this is Christian work!

"Work—work—work,
Till the brain begins to swim;
Work—work—work,
Till the eyes are heavy and dim!
Seam, and gusset, and band,
Band, and gusset, and seam,
Till over the buttons I fall asleep,
And sew them on in a dream!

"O, men, with sisters dear!
O, men, with mothers and wives!
It is not linen you're wearing out,
But human creatures' lives!
Stitch—stitch—stitch,
In poverty, hunger and dirt,
Sewing at once, with a double thread,
A Shroud as well as a Shirt.

"But why do I talk of death?
That phantom of grisly bone,
I hardly fear his terrible shape,
It seems so like my own—
It seems so like my own,
Because of the fasts I keep;
Oh, God! that bread should be so dear.
And flesh and blood so cheap!

"Work—work—work!
My labour never flags;
And what are its wages? A bed of straw,
A crust of bread—and rags.
That shattered roof—this naked floor—
A table—a broken chair—
And a wall so blank, my shadow I thank
For sometimes falling there!

"Work—work—work!
From weary chime to chime,
Work—work—work,
As prisoners work for crime!
Band, and gusset, and seam,
Seam, and gusset, and band,
Till the heart is sick, and the brain benumbed,
As well as the weary hand.

"Work—work—work,
In the dull December light,
And work—work—work,
When the weather is warm and bright—
While underneath the eaves
The brooding swallows cling
As if to show me their sunny backs
And twit me with the spring.

"O! but to breathe the breath
Of the cowslip and primrose sweet—
With the sky above my head,
And the grass beneath my feet;
For only one short hour
To feel as I used to feel,
Before I knew the woes of want
And the walk that costs a meal!

"O! but for one short hour!
A respite however brief!
No blessed leisure for Love or hope,
But only time for grief!
A little weeping would ease my heart,
But in their briny bed
My tears must stop, for every drop
Hinders needle and thread!"

With fingers weary and worn,
With eyelids heavy and red,
A woman sat in unwomanly rags,
Plying her needle and thread—
Stitch! stitch! stitch!
In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch,—
Would that its tone could reach the Rich!—
She sang this "Song of the Shirt!"

I like that Stanley, this verse is very meaningful :laugh5:
But oh how they lived sewing by candle light

"Work—work—work,
Till the brain begins to swim;
Work—work—work,
Till the eyes are heavy and dim!
Seam, and gusset, and band,
Band, and gusset, and seam,
Till over the buttons I fall asleep,
And sew them on in a dream!

But oh how they lived sewing by candle light, day in day out for a pittance not really to be laughed at.

Stanley , when I meant laugh I meant the one verse, pertaining to how I felt not the whole poem which as you say was anything but funny.

Today is the U3A radio pantomime of Cinderella by the creative writing group. There is a setting up and rehearsal at 11.00, then a lunch break before the meeting and actual event at 2.00 pm. This will be followed by the annual Christmas quiz. I don’t like quizzes and particularly this Christmas one, prepared by the U3A quiz group, which seems to be more of a show case for their skills getting harder each year and not the fun questions they used to be. You have to be in their frame of mind which I am not. Quizzes I find are highly competitive and not the fun they say they are. I suppose I don’t like them because I am competitive but simply cannot do them. They always seem to be full of questions I do not understand, do not know or indeed do not really want to know. The general knowledge revolves round the arts and theatre culture ( and cinema) which are not our interests particularly and the token science question is so obscure or so specialised that most including me , would not know the answer. We don’t recognise celebrities and although we both read avidly they are not the sort of books that appear in these quizzes. This year the quiz was voted out and replaced with the panto. The quiz group objected so it is back. I feel cheated. We don’t normally go to the Christmas meeting because of the quiz. Now I have to go because of the panto and my role of scene setting with a power point presentation. Moan over ! :laugh5:

At least its a day away from the dreaded yellow top !!!
