When I first moved down here in the 1980's I lived next door to a chap who was a retired lamplighter. Must have been one of the last. He had done the lights in the royal parks which I guess had gas lamps a lot later than most areas.

If you look up lamplighters on Google you'll find that there are still lamplighters at work in cities that have promoted tourism and kept traditional gas lamps in central areas. (LINK)

Looks like it could be a pub. Are they delivering ice? The sets in the roads are very even, is it Belgium? I've no idea why I say that!

Guess it can't contain anything too smelly, drippy or repugnant if the carter at the door is carrying it on his shoulders!
Could it be Coal? (Though that does not need putting in a tub when a sack would do).
Could it be dried Peat?
