Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I'm pushing you too hard, I shall come clean. The cast iron is normal grade but is made glass-hard (and brittle) during casting by casting on a 'chill' in the mould which encourages fast cooling 'freezing' the iron while it is in transition through the various crystalline structures. This produces 'white iron' , a fault in a normal casting because it causes machining problems but in the ploughshare is a great advantage, giving very good resistance to abrasive wear.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I didn't know about white iron but found this on Wikipedia...
`White iron is too brittle for use in many structural components, but with good hardness and abrasion resistance and relatively low cost, it finds use in such applications as the wear surfaces (impeller and volute) of slurry pumps, shell liners and lifter bars in ball mills and autogenous grinding mills, balls and rings in coal pulverisers, and the teeth of a backhoe's digging bucket (although cast medium-carbon martensitic steel is more common for this application).' LINK
Now then, what's this?

Well, that didn't last long! I suspected it might be too easy for OG members. Well done and thanks for the video!

I have the book.... Some of the weird inventions they used did work though.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Is it one of those machines where you put envelopes in one bit and letters (namely accounts) in another bit and somehow the machine folds the letter, slips it into the envelope (window faced of course) then seals the envelope and francs it. ?? No I didn’t think so
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here.

For the woman who has everything. A machine to sort and roll the kid's socks...

Has the phallic symbol on the chalk board anything to do with it ?
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Lathe, with differences, no bore in head stock, single drive to carriage ie. screw or cutting speeds, appears to have a "back gear" drive, slow speed rpm, two tool posts >, and cannot identify the the three round objects on the apron, other than that no cone pulley so single speed belt drive conventional lathe
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
As Stanley writes `There is a big clue in the image'. Yes, you can see it on the blackboard behind them. They've designed that engine to power the rocket for Johnny's first moonshot from the launching base on Weets.

Nah...its for sorting socks. A labour saving device for the modern housewife. Takes up no space at all.

Or maybe it opens closely wrapped plastic items and blister packs for the elderly.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Funny you should say that Cazza. Mr Febby has terrible trouble opening those well sealed Mr Kiplings Cakes. He could starve to death before he finally gets them open. Probably a good thing, as it puts him off eating them. Those squeezy Tomato Sauce pouches are a mystery to him too...

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Lovely posts..... Gloria got very close with copy lathe. Ian hit the target with shells. It's a specialised lathe for finish turning the shaped forgings for shells.
