That's quite obviously a Barnoldswick Starling. A recent mutation caused by the increase in the amount of fast-food waste discarded on our streets.
Noticed yesterday that the efforts to reduce the water-cress in the old mill race in Valley Gardens have had an unexpected consequence, the bits they missed have spread all the way downstream. No problem of course, it's filtering and purifying the water in the race and doing a good job. Forget Liver-Fluke! Leave it alone!

We rescued this baby toad from a bird bath in our garden yesterday. It was struggling to get out of the cold water and obviously liked being warmed up in the sun and from the heat of my hand. When it began to look more lively we took it to a drystone wall along the side of the garden and I held it near a crevice. As soon as it saw the dark crevice it dived in! One happy toad. The dry stone wall is only a couple of courses high but made out of old stone and with lots of crevices and gaps but ever since we made it we've seen more toads and I'm sure the newts use it too.

When I lived in Tottington I lifted the small manhole cover to get at the main water stopcock in my garden. It was the type of cover that is about 6" Square with a small hole in the centre to locate a lifting bar. When I reached in I got a fright when something moved. It was an adult toad. It was far too big to get in there so it must have entered when it was very small and lived in there ever since. I wonder what it thought when it was released into the real world?

I left my gardening shoes outside a few years ago. I can still recall the feeling the next day, when I put one back on. I don't know which as more surprised - me or the toad which had established squatters rights overnight. We both survived the experience.

We soon learned to knock our boots on the floor before putting them on when there were scorpions about....
Canada geese flying over Barlick chattering to each other. I love to see them!
