Grey and hazy most days this week; here's one of this yellow blossom, which is a common sight across Barlick at the moment.

A rainbow greeted me when I drew the curtains at 7 o'clock this morning; faded slightly by the time I got my camera, but just visible in this picture.

Another picture taken through the window from where I'm sat. Not sure that this starling looks too pleased that the crows have hijacked its nesting site.

A much underrated bird, more colours in the feathers than almost any other when the sun hits them at the right angle.

This could have been posted in What Attracted Attention... repairs being carried out on the main building in the gas works yard.

The property changed hands at the back end of last year. The new owners, whoever they are, have a very different idea about looking after their buildings than the previous ones. The roof, which previously had pigeons going in and out through the gaps of missing slates, has had roofers on it for the last couple of weeks. The front section of the building has had its pointing hacked out and yesterday it was sandblasted.

Good! I have been told that when it was the gas showrooms local schools went down there to do their cookery classes.

You've reminded me that there was an unusual planning application in the BET this week. Wardle Storey have applied to increase the height of the chimney at Grove Mill, probably for a venturi like the one at Crow Nest.

Prospect is the white painted house. Duckpond with the statues is higher up the hill.

I used to deliver groceries to Duckpond every week via Folly Lane. They have abandoned that route now and use Lister Well Lane and an extension of the track to Prospect. Was the man called Wilbur Duxbury? I remember he had a very high pitched voice and lived on his own in the 1950s.

Let's see if I've got this one right...

Image

Lower Standridge Farm.

I think the scaffolding may be in connection with building an outshot which recently got planning consent.

The property has been no more than a shell for ages. Whenever I go past the building, I think how badly it fits into the landscape.

Here's part of the recent planning report:

The property is relatively isolated and located outside the settlement boundary of
Barnoldswick, within the Open Countryside. It is falls within the extremities of the
Calf Hall and Gillians Conservation Area boundary.

The site has a relatively convoluted planning history spanning back to 1975. It
appears that the original building was in a state of disrepair and several applications
submitted to convert and extend parts of it. However the building was demolished
and permission eventually granted for the replacement which currently stands on the
land, following further submissions and amendments.

I used to deliver there as well in the 1950s. The Robinson family. Lots of stories about them....

Mrs Robinson was a big woman. She used to carry the milk down to the stand each morning in a back kit and bring back any proven delivered by Hoyle's. The joke was that they were the most progressive farmers in the district because they were the first to go onto 28lb bags. Robinson said that was as much as his wife could carry.....
