I went to a talk at Kelbrook church this afternoon about the clock and it's maker Thomas Cooke of York. Martin Lunn the Earby astronomer gave a very interesting and enthusiastic talk but the pews were unforgiving.

We had an interesting and thought provoking talk at the History Society last night about "Jack's War" by Ian Lockwood, former Craven Herald editor and author of The History of Skipton.
Ian's father Jack was 18 in March 1944 and joined the Paras because the pay was 6d more a day. After training he went out to Germany with the 6th Airborne Division, parachuting into Wesel and playing his part in the Rhine Crossing. Ian knew nothing about his father's war time experiences as it was never discussed between them.
In 2005 Ian heard about the Lottery funded Heroes Return Project and, to his surprise, Jack agreed to take part. They set off together to visit the places he had been and quite a story came out. Although Jack had vivid memories of certain incidents, he wasn't aware at the time of the full story of the advance to the Rhine. Ian has managed to piece it together with the help of the war diary of Colonel Richard Pine-Coffin ( known as Wooden Box) transcribed by his son.
Interesting stuff, particularly the effect that opening up about his experiences had on Jack. From hating everything about war, the Forces, Remembrance Days etc, he was transformed and become proud of what he had been a part of.

I remember working in one of the offices when we changed to decimalisation, all good fun trying to convince people they had to do it.

My Dad ran an illegal book in the late 1920s and 30s when he was working in Trafford Park. He got too clever and didn't lay off a 'sure fire loser', it won of course and wiped him out. That was the end of his bookmaking days. He always said that if he hadn't been so clever he could have been a wealthy bloke.....

A few years ago I read that there were only two professional gamblers who made a living from backing horses. Needless to say I didn't recognise their names. I follow the old adage. Only gamble with money you don't need which begs the question of why you are trying to accumulate more of the stuff you didn't need in the first place?

Not knowing the answer to that question is the basic reason you and I aren't gamblers Ken.

For a fuller and better understanding of 'gambling'- I'd recommend "A bit of a flutter" by Mark Clapson. Pub - Manchester University Press. ISBN 0-7190-3436-1. It's a serious scholarly piece of work, well researched and based largely on the North West. Unusually I found that the journalistic cliche - that any book on a subject of which I have some knowledge, inevitably contains mistakes - didn't apply. I didn't find any - even in the dog racing chapter which is exemplary.

Not the usual giveaway price on Abebooks,. but a good public library will get it for you if you fancy it. My copy came from La Salle University Library (Philadelphia), and was £7 odd. More than I usually pay on Abe.

I find I put a Book Dart here. It's good to revisit a book and see what impressed you at the time.

Seems his name was in fact Jenkins not Power at all.

PS - Interesting to listen to his speech /'cockney' accent. I doubt we'll ever hear any Londoner ever speak like that again.
