The penny has finally dropped here. Nothing I can say will improve the situation, but just to let you know Ian that having known you for a few years now, this seems like a personal loss. I've seen you are still about on the site. Come back to us when you feel able. Dave.

Thank you all for your comments it means a lot to Sally and myself. Dan's funeral on Friday was overwhelming with the number of people that turned up at the church. It is heartening to know that he was so well regarded. I have been looking in on the site to try and keep some form of normality in an otherwise totally horrible situation, we still have a way to go yet. I don't want to perpetuate the thread solely with our woes but will post in other threads when it feels right. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Losing a child is perhaps the most terrible thing that can happen to a family. As I think of Sally and Ian I find myself looking at the picture of Big Harry in the cabin of the plane in which he was burned to death in August 2003. You never forget the shock when you fully appreciate what has happened. In Harry's case it took seven years to get the legal consequences settled. The only faint shaft of light for Sally and Ian is that they have each other and I am sure will be giving mutual support but let us never forget that an event like this doesn't go away and the family, though it will survive, will never be the same again. I think about Harry daily and in future will be remembering Sally and Ian as well. I have a vague idea of what they are going through.

It was great to hear so many astronomers relating their stories of how he influenced their choice of subject or of their amateur interest, and also of his ability on the xylophone. One described how excited Sir Patrick was when giving lectures and how once he fell off the back of the stage but "never missed a beat" and simply kept on with the lecture.
