I've got one more convert to the Johnny cult! I sent Mick my book on Brown and Pickles and he went straight to the information about Johnny's 1927 copy of the Birch Lathe. He wanted one but couldn't afford it so he made his own....

Here it is, fully refurbished and sat in my front room!

August 1923 outside John Pickles's workshop in Federation Street at Barlick. L to R; Herbert Hidersley (an amateur clockmaker from London, friend of JP), John Pickles, Newton Pickles, Dennis Pickles (no relation, worked under John at Browns, Brierley holding dog, he was a greengrocer on Wellhouse Road in Barlick. Johnny used to help amateurs by doing difficult machining jobs for them (he never charged for this) Hildersely was there because Johnny had made a conical volute pulley for him for a clock he was making which had a chain drive from the spring and the conical pulley compensated for the reduction in driving force as the spring relaxed. Johnny had made an attachment for his Drummond lathe to facilitate this.

Hill Top farm at Letcliffe about 1890 I think. When we lived at Hey Farm Jack Stansfield the butcher had it and the right of way straight down, coming out at the bottom of Park Avenue, the original route, was still open.

Can you remember when 'prams' (short for perambulators) were the real deal? The Silver Cross made at Guisley was the Rolls Royce and were the ambition of every new mother. Built like royal carriages with smaller wheels at the front they were serviced just like a car. The Pram Shop on Rainhall Road was pram central in Barlick.

Silver Cross are now based at Micklethorn at Elslack road end on the A59.

They had the best wheels for home made trolleys as well, big un's at the back and the little un's for steering.

Asked my friends in Colne Library about this photo and have been reliably informed that it is taken in Rimington. The shop is now a private house.

Thanks for that Wendy.
The thing I remember most about the big black pram that my sister and I shared at one time (There is only 13 months between us) is that it had removable sections in the bottom over the curved base. We were sat in it one day when a man gave us some sweets. At the time there was a scare about people giving poisoned sweets to children so Dorothy and I hid the sweets under the base board of the prom because we had been warned against accepting sweets from strangers.

Not Barnoldswick, but there is a link. On our trip to Whitby last weekend, these two old Ladies were much in evidence. The first is Elizabeth, a Sentinel Steam Coach, Sadly this could be her last appearance as an attraction in Whitby, her owners are struggling to meet her costs.

During my forays into Youtube I searched for Barlick and found some good stuff which included the collection of old pics of Barlick that Gus put up. A wnderful trip down memory lane! Gus was a good egg and mentioned that some were mine. No problems at all about that and Gus, if there are any others I have that you want just give a shout, you are welcome!

Just looking at the Brown and Pickles photo, it's amazing the difference in the fashions between generations.
I would have been sat at the front in a mini (for sure !). :laugh5:

Some of the clues to forgotten corners can be quite obscure. If you ever see stone bearing this pattern of holes it is evidence they were split using plugs and feathers. This method is still used in modern quarries for precision cutting of large stones for high class masonry and sculpture but long ago was the only way the quarrymen had to break up stone to a size where it could be broken down with hammers to get such products as road stone. So, if you ever see them in this area you know that you are looking at evidence of an old quarry. It pays to keep your eyes peeled!

Stephen Gladstone Pickles, born 15 March 1899. Died about 1985. In this pic, taken at his nephew Stephen Hartley Pickles wedding in 1949(?) Looks about right, he was about 50 in this pic. Wife called Ann, one of Nelson family from Gledstone.
The Pickles were of course one of the most successful cotton manufacturers in the town. In the end they controlled both Long Ing and Barnsey Sheds.

Park Close Quarry at Salterforth shortly after it closed. For many years the quarry was used by Gibson as a scrapyard and he died suddenly in an air accident. For years I was pestered by a man who swore that Gibson had hidden some money and he was obsessed with finding out where it was. I'd heard this rumour before but never found any evidence to support the theory. Wouldn't it be a laugh if it turned out to be true......
