I drifted off target because I thought the two pieces had been created by a single cut. Hence the fine wire suggestion. If they were made a separate pieces, an inner and an outer, the wire cutting technique is as old as the hills. We had dozens of spark machines using copper electrodes to impart a given shape but never used de-ionised water as the electrolyte media. But all is forgiven.

The wire erosion principal has been developed as an edge cutting process, where as spark erosion using copper electrodes is a burn through process, which is less efficient in both time and energy.
