Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I heard a report on the famous song 'Strange Fruit' sung by Billie Holiday on R4 this morning and was surprisede to hear it was written by a Jewish songwriter. Have a look at THIS Wiki article on the song and the story of how Holiday was persecuted by the FBI. A very sad story.....

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
This is fun and there are some ideas that could trigger off other projects. The tiled risers on the staircase reminded me of a photo we saw of someone's house front. They had covered the wall below their bay window with small inch square tiles in a range of colours. They said the locals loved it and they got lots of compliments. So simple yet so effective and pleasing. Lockdown has been a big boost for creativity!

There was documentary on Billie last night, as you say a very sad story of exploitation and persecution.Stanley wrote: ↑14 Mar 2021, 07:50 I heard a report on the famous song 'Strange Fruit' sung by Billie Holiday on R4 this morning and was surprisede to hear it was written by a Jewish songwriter. THIS sad case has been on my mind but I have resisted banging on about it. Lots of politicians going on about the cruelty of the process. I wonder how many of them remember this..... Have a read of THIS, we legalised the use of such torture over 100 years ago with the 'Cat and Mouse' Act.

Watching that link triggered me into THIS one. The lady says that if food gets scarce they eat themselves to survive and have no predators. That's proper survival!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I found this picture of Nanning this evening and thought it was interesting. We have an apartment in the blue square building on its own in the centre of the peninsula (to the left of the 4 big towers), and another one at the tip of the peninsular at the very right hand side. We don't spend much time in Nanning but will be going for a couple of days on Thursday and Friday this week.

No explanation, it just made me laugh out loud...

China, I like the pic and lots of gardens at the riverside as far as I can see.
Kev, I'm a bit suspicious about that pic. Look at the back tyre on the motorbike, it shows no sign of any weight.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I believe it having seen what they transport on motor bikes here. Love the way has roped the load! I once saw a motorbike with two ten-foot helium advertising balloons attached by ropes. The trouble was they danced about as he went along and the load was well over 20 feet wide. The traffic just followed behind him! We used to get horses and carts carrying sand but I think they must have been banned from the city as I haven't seen any for a few years.
Several miles of the river banks through Nanning were landscaped and turned into riverside parkland, with cycling and walking tracks. They spent a lot of money and made an extremely good job of it. The problem is that at the top of both riverbanks are flood defence walls and I've personally seen the water within 50 cm of the top on two occasions. Maybe they have found another way of controlling the water level and storm surges. I think it was 1995 or 1996 when Nanning city was flooded with over 4 metres of water in the city centre, just before the flood defences were completed.

China, you must certainly be able to see a lot of life from your apartment, and the opportunity to mingle with the locals, if you want to.
It must be quite a view.

I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here.
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I do remember my husband having a bike tyre explode in his face whilst over inflating it. An enormous bang, a cloud of dust and a confused man with the pump still in his hand. It was hilarious.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
The village we stayed in when we went to Rhodes had a few restaurants and a bloke used to come every morning with a full sized freezer on the back of a scooter delivering ice. There was also another guy in the village who had 5 kids, (youngest about 7) and he could often be seen transporting the entire family including his wife, 7 folk on one 150cc scooter, nearly a display team.

They are city views from both of our apartments in Nanning, we enjoy a more rural view where we live in Pingguo. I'm not really a city person, more of a country bumpkin, or earth dumplings as they are known here. Pingguo is a very small city by Chinese standards, and very rural, but is expanding quickly and we are gradually losing our mountain views.
The locals are great, very friendly and hospitable people.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Nice day so I went for a walk....
First thing I saw was this collapsed wall in the back street. My mate Brian tells me it went at 05:30 this morning, I never heard it. The lamp post is holding it up at this side, the other is still leaning badly. The landlord says he will be there tomorrow morning....
Then on my walk I saw this. It looks as though we are in for some more flagging.....

They all look to have a bit of a lean, is the ground soft under them?Stanley wrote: ↑17 Mar 2021, 14:07 Nice day so I went for a walk....

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
It looks more like perspective distortion due to the camera - if you look at the r.h. side everything seems to be leaning the opposite way.
When they clear away the rubble they might find the body of the burglar who was trying to climb over the wall and was just enough extra weight to bring it down!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Bit of distortion there but the walls do lean and it is bad bearing ground.
I had the same thought Peter, not specifically a burglar but anything that might have been passing.
It made me think of other stone structures that are leaning.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
It remenids me of about 8 years ago when we lived in the village and there was a spate of old walls collapsing or beginning to crumble. It could have been a combination of the rainfall increasing and perhaps many old walls having been built at about the same time and nearing their `safe by' date.
