I surfed it on the local library shelf years ago, and my odd memory won't let me forget about it.
He has a terrier sort of dog named after him The" Plummer Terrier"which I quite like the look of.

A pipe socket, the splined end goes inside the pipe so you don't damage the outside with Stilsons (that's my understanding anyway).

Got it in one Kev, an internal pipe wrench, they come in sets for different size pipes. Most common use is getting a broken piece of pipe out at a joint.
