I kept quiet about this one as I probably had one during my craniotomy. I have two holes in my skull where they gained access to saw out the bone flap. I watched a procedure the other week on TV which was a very similar case to mine although the guy had milder symptoms. His tumour was in roughly the same place sitting on the motor cortex but a bit smaller. It was only impacting his upper body with arm cramps. The neurosurgeon gave a running commentary during the procedure. With mine they used one of the access holes for the drain which I had for a couple of days after surgery. All fascinating precision stuff.

Well done Kev. Exactly right. I think Google was the only way to get it. I certainly had no idea until I found it.
Now for the next one. What is this.....

Sorry but neither of you is close. Small correction, it could possibly be a part of both of them but that's not the answer and I want the name.....

A circular measuring device, perhaps for measuring the circumference of a roller or similar item? Just guessing!

I've just had another bright idea! For measuring and producing a hank of yarn prior to weighing and determining the count. Sorry, I'm just guessing in the dark. Could be used by spinners.

Graham, it wasn't engineering, it is a tool used by a surveyor for measuring distances on large maps or plans.

We're just back from Cornwall. Can you identify the plant that was growing over the pergola at our holiday cottage?
