Had to laugh yesterday, I was sat out the back having my lunch and reading my book when i heard a rustle in the ivy. Being alerted I kept watching just incase a snake was on the move (looking for water), couldn't see the ivy actually moving. A few minutes before I had put water out for the birds and thrown the excess old water over the ivy. The 'movement' came into view and all i could see was the head of something that I had obviously disturbed. After a second of panic I saw that the creature had legs, oh! thank goodness, it was only the blue tongued lizard that visits my garden annually. He came towards me, flicked his tongue a few times, realised I wasn't what he was looking for and went back into the ivy. His tongue is irridescent blue. Lovely to see him. For a while over the warmer months I will remember not to throw any excess water into the ivy. I'm happy to have him in my garden and want him to feel secure here.

Nice to have company in the garden Cathy, we have many frogs and toads one resident Hedgehog and another that visits.plus a fox who uses us as a shortcut. living next to a wood we have a lot of squirrels but the dogs keep them at fence top level.

This reminds me of the red kite feeding station in North Wales at Bwlch Nant yr Arian, near Aberystwyth. They feed them 10kg of beef offcuts every afternoon and normally get between 100 and 200 red kites per session. It really is an amazing sight and well worth a visit if you are ever in the area.

Yes Pete the red kite feeding is a chance not to be missed, the herons are a daily event at Muncaster castle Cumbria where food is put out for them.

I last visited Muncaster on a school trip in the 1960's. The two things I remember most were seeing the owls and also seeing an Amphicar parked in the grounds..!

These birds were in the garden yesterday. The white ones are Ibis, I'm not sure about the black ones.

If they landed in Barlick every twitcher in the kingdom would descend on us!

Egrets used to be a very rare site in this country, now they are every where. The winter visitors are now arriving in good numbers, this morning I noted several skeins of geese passing over by the sound probably Pinkfeet. At a rough guess there were near a thousand. Time for a trip to Southport to photograph them.

Mary has a chat with some young Shires, they are always willing to stop what they are doing, and come over.
