Bob Dillon 'Desolation Row.

Sounds to be an insight into the ghetto city areas where nobody knows what's going on.

Thanks for the Dylan post, Tripps. It's a long time since I last heard Desolation Row. For a while in my undergraduate days I shared a place with 4 other lads. Furnishings were very basic - except for the presence of a piano. On of our Welsh pals was a good pianist and singer and whenever he came round he'd belt out songs by Dylan and others. He also did older pieces such as Woody Guthrie songs. All helped along by a few beers - never drugs. The music might have been dark but we had happy times!

You're welcome and thanks for the comment. At least two of us like it.

Here's Dylan's 115th Dream - the version with the false start. . .

If you, like me, are curious about the Pope of Eruke - well you're on your own there. No idea.

Here are the lyrics.

I was riding on the Mayflower
When I thought I spied some land
Start again
Wait a minute now man
Okay, take 2

I was riding on the Mayflower
When I thought I spied some land
I yelled for Captain Arab, I have you understand
Who came a-running to the deck
Said, "Boys, forget the whale
Where goin' over yonder, cut the engines, change the sails"
"Haul on the bowline", we sang that melody
Like all tough sailors do
When they are far away at sea

"I think I'll call it America"
I said as we hit land
I took a deep breath
I fell down, I could not stand
Captain Arab, he started writing up some deeds
He said, "Let's set up a fort
And start buyin' the place with beads"
Just then this cop comes down the street
Crazy as a loon
He throws us all in jail, for carryin' harpoons

Ah, me I busted out, don't even ask me how
I went to get some help
I walked by a Guernsey cow
Who directed me down, to the Bowery slums
Where people carried signs around, sayin', "Ban the bums"
I jumped right into line, sayin'
"I hope that I'm not late"
When I realized I hadn't eaten for five days straight

I went into a restaurant lookin' for the cook
I told them I was the editor
Of a famous etiquette book
The waitress, he was handsome
He wore a powder-blue cape
I ordered some suzette
I said, "Could you please make that crepe"
Just then the whole kitchen, exploded from boilin' fat
Food was flyin' everywhere, I left without my hat

Now, I didn't mean to be nosy
But I went into a bank
To get some bail for Arab
And all the boys back in the tank
They asked me for some collateral
And I pulled down my pants
They threw me in the alley
When up comes this girl from France
Who invited me to her house
I went, but she had a friend
Who knocked me out and robbed my boots
And I was on the street again

Well, I rapped upon a house
With the U.S. flag upon display
I said, "Could you help me out?
I got some friends down the way"
The man says, "Get out of here
I'll tear you limb from limb"
I said, "You know, they refused Jesus, too"
He said, "You're not Him"
"Get out of here before I break your bones
I ain't your pop"
I decided to have him arrested
And I went looking for a cop

I ran right outside, I hopped inside a cab
I went out the other door, this Englishman said, "Fab"
As he saw me leap a hot dog stand
And a chariot that stood
Parked across from a building advertising brotherhood
I ran right through the front door
Like a hobo sailor does
But it was just a funeral parlor
And the man asked me who I was

I repeated that my friends were all in jail
With a sigh
He gave me his card, he said
"Call me if they die"
I shook his hand and said, "Goodbye"
Ran out to the street
When a bowling ball came down the road
And knocked me off my feet
A pay phone was ringing
And it just about blew my mind
When I picked it up and said, "Hello"
This foot came through the line

Well, by this time I was fed up
At tryin' to make a stab
At bringin' back any help
For my friends and Captain Arab
I decided to flip a coin
Like either heads or tails
Would let me know, if I should go
Back to ship or back to jail
So I, hocked my sailor suit
And I got a coin to flip
It came up tails, it rhymed with sails
So I made it back to the ship

Well, I got back
And took the parkin' ticket off the mast
I was ripping it to shreds
When this Coast Guard boat went past
They asked me my name, and I said, "Captain Kidd"
They believed, me but they wanted to know
What exactly that I did
I said, for the Pope, of Eruke I was employed
They let me go right away, they were very paranoid

Well, the last I heard of Arab
He was, stuck on a whale
That was married to the deputy, sheriff of the jail
But the funniest thing was
When I was leavin' the bay
I saw three ships a-sailin'
They were all heading my way
I asked the captain what his name was
And how come he didn't drive a truck
He said his name was Columbus
I just said, "Good luck"

Enough Dylan for now - something more mellow, from Eric Bibb - and no need for the lyrics here.

Splendid - well done. We're on the same page with that chap. Perhaps not the singing though.

In a fit of spontaneous generosity - I've sent you The Complete Verse. Best 3 quid I've spent this month. :laugh5:

An' I'm learnin' 'ere in London what the ten-year soldier tells:
"If you've 'eard the East a-callin', you won't never 'eed naught else."

I made a copy of this a while ago. Charles Dance - in good company. I think he had Inspector George Gently for his voice coach though,

I saw that yesterday and nearly opened it, good for the lyrics but I'd rather hear it sung.

After a disastrous day of laying some vinyl in a toilet area and the entrance passageway only to have the sink overflow and having to take it all up again I thought a bit of cheering up music was called for.
A remake of George Formby's Fanlight Fanny by Clinton Ford.

Back in 1971 I bought the first pressing of Billy Joel's debut album Cold Spring Harbor because I liked his picture on the sleeve. I loved every track and played it endlessly but for some reason I never enjoyed his later music and it was only recently that I found out it had been recorded at the wrong speed, giving him a high pitched voice.

To anyone on Facebook with an interest in old photographs of Colne, my pal Elaine started this group a few years back but it has become quite lively recently.

Let's see if this works - eat your heart out Billy Joel. . . .

Seems to - just click on the thumbnail, then be patient for a moment, then go to full screen.

I'm sorr4y but I am a miserable old bugger. I don't like crowded rooms, loud music or blues and for the last decade booze and tobacco are off my agenda as well. So I couldn't really get enthusiastic about the club video. Sorry again.....

I've had it copied for ages - and I think you are right about the provenance.

There's more to it than whether you would like to attend. I see it as an important social document - and I suggest is in the process of becoming one of our 'forgotten corners'. Pubs in general, and that type of gathering are becoming rarer. Not that you would know it by following Gus Brennan's posts, which I recommend without reservation. Look here Gus Brennan

I see it it as wonderful, and Rabelaisian, and would love to see what Manet would have made of it all. I suggest he's have made a good job of the opening screen, and a lot more besides. Fanciful - I agree, but they can't touch you for it.

The industrial working class at play - drinking beer, relaxing and listening to maudlin ballads from a local singer. Having a nice time. I love the group of unaccompanied ladies, and was rather hoping Stanley would tell us they were weavers from Bancroft, and name a few of them.

Open your mind. . . . :laugh5:

I, along with just about every other Barlicker and anyone else who stands still long enough feature in Gussy's photos. 7.1 million views can't be wrong.

He is of course a fellow trustee of Bosom Friends.

On another matter, I can recommend Jacs bar in Barlick where we have been for lunch. A few beers and a mixed meat and cheese platter to share for Sally and myself. Good banter from a couple of friends who happened to be there also included.

You're quite right David and I agree with you. I worded my response badly on a very shallow level of whether it was 'my thing'. You are quite right about the importance of such gatherings in terms of social history and in that sense I agree with you entirely. My response on a personal level shouldn't be taken as a complete rejection by me, far from it.
I may be an antisocial old git but I am also quite a competent social historian..... :biggrin2:
