What fascinates me in extreme cold is how the water at the bottom of a pond that freezes stays liquid and allows the life that lives there to survive. Nature is pretty smart! :biggrin2:

Yes, it's like thermostatic control. The water below the ice stays at a constant temperature. If the weather gets colder more water will freeze but the water stays the same temperature. Unfortunately those pesky human beings have been polluting water with nasty chemicals and when some of the water in a pond freezes that raises the concentration of the chemicals in the remaining water below.

What has grabbed my attention is that my grand daughter Holly has just given birth to baby Evelyn (Evie) this morning. I think you can guess how happy I am! Wonderful........

She is the most beautiful baby and she and Holly had a good night. All seems to be well.
As is the case here at Graham Towers.... A good night's sleep and all the ice has gone. Even the CH is switched off!

What grabbed me was Ian being kind enough to call round for me after dinner and take me to Aldi. I couldn't get my usual veggies but certainly have enough to keep me fed for the next week. Thanks very much Mr Lambert!

I’m surprised Stanley you couldn’t get all the veg you wanted, they seem to have everything, what did they not have which you wanted?

I started looking at Flight Radar after hearing a couple of planes overhead, now gripped by watching the track of a Ryanair Boeing 737 from Shannon attempting to land at Leeds Bradford Airport....

Wow, it's given up and is heading south at 18000ft!

6.25pm it's just landed at Stansted, phew!

My friend Dave and his wife were lucky then, they flew into LBA earlier this afternoon. It's a long coach transfer from Stansted.

What veggies I couldn't find at Aldi? A cauliflower, two heads of Broccoli and two leeks .
Part of the problem was it was so busy and noisy, I found it quite confusing, made me appreciate that a smaller quieter supermarket like the Co-op definitely has things in its favour. :biggrin2:
It was so good of you to take me Ian and what lousy weather we had for it, it siled down with rain....

Stanley, I agree with Gloria re your shopping routine …
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Less stress that way.
But do ask for help, if and when you need it. 😊

You are welcome for the lift Stanley. The stuff you mention is normally down the right hand isle. Leafy stuff to the right, fruit (including tomatoes) to the left and on the other side of the fruit in isle two the root vegetables, onions and peppers.

Once you get used to the layout it's OK, we manage to write a list based on aisle layout. Sunday afternoon is a busy time, we tend to go during the week or after 7pm.

All valid points and thank you for caring enough to comment. The Co-op will not be losing me, the main attraction is it's five minutes walk from my back door, I can forgive them a lot for that! Chaudrey's in Town Square are always cheaper and of course quieter. Gulam always lifts my full basket across to the till, he wont let me lift it. Nice....
One thing I did identify which was very annoying for a bloke with bad hearing was the constant loud chirping of the barcode readers on the tills. Reassuring for the management, every one a sale, but very confusing for others.
I know, I'm getting too old for modern life!
Evie and mother Holly continue to do well in Oz. Margaret and Susan got to play out with her yesterday and I am afraid they will both go broody!

It’s Australia Day today 🇦🇺

One of our young SA farmers, Harrison Schuster, has created a map of Australia in celebration.
Harrison 27, used a computer to convert the image to a GPS map, and 2 hrs tilling it, using their 837OR John Deere.
The family farm is 68k’s north-east of Adelaide.
Harrison is hoping his map will be picked up by the Google Earth satellite. 🇦🇺 Well Done. 🇦🇺

We are getting reports of many protests on Australia Day Cathy.

See THIS report of the Alabama Execution.
Witnesses observed two to four minutes of writhing and about five minutes of heavy breathing before he was pronounced dead at 20:25 local time (02:35 GMT). Breathing nitrogen without oxygen causes cells in the body to break down and leads to death.
Witnesses universally used words like torture to describe what was done. I can't understand why any civilised society can believe that a judicial murder cancels out a criminal one. The writhing for about four minutes is exactly what experiments on animals predicted. Despite that even the Supreme Court assented to the procedure. Terrible.

The news report is interesting especially since I watched, and remembered an experiment by Michael Portillo with the Dutch Airforce on TV. They train pilots in the dangers of Hypoxia. He came close to death, and in fact, far from writhing - he was euphoric. The demonstration was supervised, and he came to no harm.

I've just read the rest of the article for the first time - interesting.

I've read the whole article David and find it macabre.... It's notable that even though he basically agrees that the state 'has the right' to take life as punishment he still rejects the death penalty on the grounds that the state is not infallible and could murder an innocent person. I still hold that the death penalty is judicial murder and that the actual executioner is a murderer.
