David.... We'd sit up and take notice if Sunak started talking about 'demonic forces' working against the government.....
Later.... I heard a profile of Donald Tusk and was reminded of his marvellous opinion.....
"British leaders who sold Brexit with no plan for how to deliver it deserve a “special place in hell”"
Couldn't have put it any better..... :biggrin2:

The fire at Luton Airport car park was started accidentally due to a vehicle fault, Sky News understands.
A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage in connection to the incident on 10 October.
It is believed the man, who has been released on bail, was arrested as a precaution and the police investigation so far suggests the fire started accidentally due to a vehicle fault.

Well that's a novelty.

I suppose they get fed up of being taken to task when they cock-up. 'Precautions' start to look like a good ploy....

More likely it was for his own safety from the drivers of the 1400 destroyed cars!

The BBC Technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones who has Parkinson's, had a fall and then lots of frustration with the NHS...
I am very grateful that the NHS finally came good and fixed me up and I am slowly getting back my mojo as I prepare for other projects...But my latest experience as a customer of the health service has nevertheless left me convinced that more money and more staff won't solve its problems without some fundamental changes in the way it communicates.

Far too common an experience I fear Peter. However, it is a more widely distributed ill than simply the NHS. Bad communications are the order of the day and the odd instances where good practices are being followed spring out at you.

"Walking down a poorly lit street in heavy rain, I tripped on a branch dislodged by the storm and my face crashed into the
I was released from hospital to go home for the night - although the paperwork for my release took four hours.
One bright spot was the NHS app which was often first with new information, such as my discharge letter, but I still had to wait for it to be printed out before I could go.
From now on, there will be an edge of fear associated with another activity which I never used to think about - going for a walk.

I do want to stress that at both hospitals I was treated by excellent staff working under great pressure in difficult circumstances.

and owner of rescue dog Sophie from Romania

I am very grateful that the NHS finally came good and fixed me up and I am slowly getting back my mojo as I prepare for other projects - not least my work with our rescue dog Sophie from Romania, who has been set back in her progress by my inability to work with her."

The man's a fool.

We can all tell stories about our treatment in the NHS - some of us choose not to do so.

He should have been aware of the risks of falls with Parkinsons, and mitigated against them. The discharge letter is complex, written by someone who is overstretched, and tired, and is actionable at law - it has to be right - that's why it takes a long time.

No need for "the edge of fear". Think about what you are doing and plan. Get a wheeled frame if necessary. Don't go for walks in the wet and in the dark.

Get rid of the Romanian rescue dog immediately. It is a hazard to his safety. and if that's impossible, stop "working with her"

PS I find it hard to believe that an 'open fracture (bone pierced skin) was not spotted on his first visit to A & E.
I've watched a lot of "24Hrs in A&E. "

Some sound common sense in there David, thanks.
When you really need them hospitals and doctors are brilliant and thank God for them but for the rest of the time keep away from them and use your head. Romanian rescue dogs are not a sensible use of anyone's time!

Here's a bit more. . .

Tha Lancashire comedian Ted Ray once wisely said

"Don't tell people your troubles - because half don't care - and the other half are glad.

(or is that 'doesn't care and is glad'?)

I'd disagree actually. There is a lot of truth in the old saw.... a trouble shared is a trouble halved. I agree it doesn't always work but sometimes can trigger quite significant help.....

"Monitoring the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) is too important to be left to big tech firms, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has said. "
Just for once Sunak says something I agree with but how is this going to be policed when the genii is out of the bottle? Pandora's box springs to mind.....

The BBC asked Gaza-based journalist Mahmoud Bassam how they cope with the dust and smell from all the explosions. In his reply was this comment: "In this war, it's different from previous wars, we're encountering a new smell of burnt bodies. Most of the injuries we've seen are burn-related."

From BBC News: In the Third US Republican debate Mr Ramaswamy.... took a shot at Ms Haley, who he has often tangled with, labelling her foreign policy approach equivalent to "Dick Cheney in three-inch heels". That comment appeared to split the audience and triggered one of the more animated responses of the night. "I'd first like to say they're five-inch heels," Ms Haley responded. "They're not for a fashion statement, they're for ammunition."

As in the UK election politics, it strikes me that the standing of the various parties is mostly down to not their merits but the awful condition of the opposition. In both cases they need a good left-leaning candidate. Preferably one that isn't past retirement age.

I know many on here swear by Ubuntu - but I've tried it and didn't get on with it at all.
Quotes like this today do nothing to encourage me to have another go.

At this year's Ubuntu conference in Rīga, Latvia, Canonical revealed more details about its forthcoming immutable desktop distro. Core Desktop is not the next version of Ubuntu itself. Ordinary desktop and server Ubuntu aren't going anywhere, and the next release, numbered 24.04 and codenamed Noble Numbat as we mentioned last month, will be the default and come with all the usual editions and flavors.

I've just ordered a bootable memory stick loaded with 20.04 as back-up if ever the FM3 fails me and I have to buy a box off the shelf. If this is bad thinking please tell me!

Where have you ordered it from? You can download Ubuntu from the Ubuntu web site for free onto your PC then make a bootable USB stick from it.

The BBC's Chris Mason: The accidental instigator of the biggest single moment in British foreign policy in a generation - Brexit - is now the face of British foreign policy, under a Brexit-supporting prime minister. Accidental, you'll recall, because he called the EU referendum hopeful his argument for Remain would triumph. It didn't, and he was a goner. Or at least he was until today.

Telegraph -

"Lord Cameron: Greensill row 'all dealt with and in the past'"

So that's OK then 'going forward'. They take us for fools.

Stolen from elsewhere -
"When I’m bored, I read a book or go to the cinema. When David Cameron is bored, he demands to be made Foreign Secretary".

As was this which I think is rather good -

In 30 years from about 1895 to 1925 the UK pretty much transitioned from gas lighting to electric lighting.
In 30 years from about 1990 to 2020 the UK has pretty much transitioned from landline phones to mobiles.
In neither case was legislation needed to force the consumer to adopt these products because the products were better than what came before. Legislation is being used to force the adoption of EV cars and heat pumps, what does that tell you?

The Guardian reports that -

"The Co-op’s Les Pionniers champagne received the top score of 85% in a blind taste test conducted by Which? with the £22.75-a-bottle bubbly wowing the panel with its “smoky notes” and “smooth creaminess”.

I won't look it up in case it isn't, and I so want it to be true.

I see this as someone at the Coop with a sense of humour , paying tribute to the 'Rochdale Pioneers'. of Toad Lane. I wonder if they could have imagined that one day a brand of champagne would be named after them.
