Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Co-op lorry in gala believed to be 1920. Lettering on wagon reads: Bakery and cafe department. Picnics, weddings and funeral parties catered for. The prize card reads Trade turnout, motor lorry. Second prize. The two girls on the flat are Gladys Windle and her cousin Eileen Watkinson. The driver is thought to be Mr Nuttall. The sign on the lorry reads 'Noutrix condensed milk. None better'. Picture lent by Dorothy Carthy, sister to Gladys.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
This is the picture that I did some sleuthing on to prove where the picture was taken. It's on Ellis Street at the side of the former Co-op building. Then and now pictures on the old site to pick up surviving building features on the buildings on Albert Road in the background.

Perhaps someone can work it out from the bus stop, it has a number 39 on it; is that a bus route?Stanley wrote:

I don't think it's Barlick the street looks like its at the top of a hill as it falls away in the distance. More like Nelson around Barkerhouse Road maybe.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Second gable along, top house on Craven Street is where Joe and Madge Tyas used to live when I was a lad and lived at number 16. I walked past yesterday and noticed that Joe's wire antenna for his amateur radio station in the attic is still strung across the street. Joe held the callsign G3NSG (Nan, Sugar, George) as he was taught in the RAF during the war, I had the pleasure of him teaching me Morse Code the first time round.

Is the year wrong here Stanley? My memory puts the demolition of the Women's Royal British Legion Building much later; 1992?Stanley wrote:Demolition on Bank Street in 1962
After it became empty, the joiner's shop was a right headache. There were umpteen meetings with different owners over several years to try and get something done about the derelict building. In the end, it took a statutory Building Act notice to get the building knocked down.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The Ford is a "G" reg, which makes it an 89/90 registration, so the picture can't have been taken before then, if that's of any help.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The car on the right is G reg which is 1989/90 so after that date. It doesn't look 15 years old although I suppose it could be. I think the RBL building was demolished sometime in the mid to late 90's. I'm sure it was still there when my mum and dad died, that was in 1994. I used to garage my Honda 500 Four in the adjacent garage on Hill street. It was a pain getting it in and out when it was icy.

I'm sure of this one, it was done in 2005, same demolition event.

Quit probably Stanley, the G reg is in good nick then. 2005 would be better suited to prolific snapping with digital as well I suppose.
