Or is it a bench stop of some kind, to stop a piece moving when you're planing it or similar? Fitted from under the bench top?

Yes, it's an oldie and Tiz has got it. Fitted into a recess in the woodworking bench top it was flush with the surface but when the screw was turned the flap rose and it became a bench stop for planing. It replaced the simple board in a slot held by a wedge. This one is a new one.... What are they?

I can't remember doing it before Gloria but my memory may be at fault. Anyway, it's gone on long enough. They are picture framer's brads, used to retain the glass, pic and backing in a wooden frame. Try this one....

Sorry China but no. I suspect it was originally used on a 2pdr anti tank gun or similar.You're in the right ball park!
