Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Whilst I was having a natter with John Boothman on Albert Road yesterday, Harry Smith turned up. Walking along with Harry, I asked him about HOWN garaging at Cobden Street. Harry said when he shifted down to the gas works yard he sold the site to... John Boothman...
Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
It's a small world. Many years ago, perhaps in late 70s or early 80s, I did a few jobs for a HGV agency and was sent to Hown Transport a few times. One of these jobs was to pick up a full load of carpets from a factory in Whitefield one Friday night, meet up with the carpet fitters near London, and deliver the carpet rolls to a hotel in central London early on Saturday morning. When I picked up the truck there were 2 young men waiting with Harry. He asked me if I would mind if they accompany me as they had never been to London. Wonder where they are now? Anyway, glad to hear Harry is well, he was a nice person to work for.
For the life in me I cannot remember where Hown Transport was.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
When the LTP gets back to the site have a read of Emma Clark's transcripts. Her husband Billy started a haulage firm and she dishes the dirt on what happened to it. Nothing to do with Harry but one of the Nutters bought him out and they called it Stock Beck Haulage I think. Not the most successful firm under the sun....

Len Bottom again because Steve Woofenden says that his grandfather used to call them Dyehouse Cottages. Never come across that before.

Toothing stones on Rainhall Road near the end of Valley Road. Shows where the building stopped with the advent of WW1.

I did this pic in Barlick in 1980 but can't remember where it was. Anyone recognise it?

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Thanks for that Wendy, I have modified the title in my archive.
Just posted for an example. This interesting bit of walling is at Hayn Slack above Blacko. John Clayton and I found it when we were furtling for evidence of Malkin Tower. Always have a close look at walls, they can give all sorts of clues. Some are just random field stone but others have reclaimed stone in them that can give clues to what used to exist nearby.
Back to toothing stones, my favourite quotation from Machiavelli's 'The Prince' is "Every change leaves a toothing stone for the next".

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Here's another example from the road side near the junction with the Slipper Hill road on the way to Blacko from Barlick. Some of these stones are reclaimed from an old building. Question is what was the building and why was it made in stone at what was evidently a very early date?

Not Barlick but definitely a forgotten corner now. The Hole in the Wall pub at Foulridge under demolition in January 2010.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Not the one Stanley, I think we were a little further up Water Street. Selbourne Terrace is on the right immediately after you go over the narrow bridge on Water Street where it becomes Red Lion Street. I was only 4 when I left there and even my few recollections of it are fading. My mother and father bought it for I think £140 (and maybe they sold it for £350? in 1950). Water Street had flooded then also, I think it could have been in 1949.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Thanks Wendy. That's the one. Probably the one with the extension at the front. The road on the left goes to the YHA, and then to the waterfalls which I used to think were huge, the Niagara Falls of Earby. I was quite disappointed when I went back in later years.
