Does the red band signify hot, so is it a tap of some sort?? If not, how big is it?? Could it be a beer pump?!

That did far better than I thought it would but Cathy has scored a bull's eye and Gloria was close enough as well! Exactly right, it's a novelty gas lighter I was given by a mate and in case you are wondering it was always useless!

China cracked the clue.... Yes, it's the Nalfloc hydrometer and jar that I used for calculating levels of dissolved solids in boiler water. Nalfloc was a division of the old ICI.

The 5 spired church can be seen, in the background of the pic of the wooden anchor, in your link Tripps. It's a lovely town, medieval at one end and coffee shop/street cafe culture at the other.
