It's an instrument for weighing a sample of cloth. It determines the weight of the cloth in ozs/sq.yd or g/sm etc.
Similarly it can be used to determine the count of yarn by weighing a specified length of yarn. The box contains the template for cutting a square of the material that is being examined.

P has it right. The plate for cutting the sample is for cotton, there's a smaller one underneath for wool. I don't fully understand how to use it but it's small enough to fit in your pocket and carry round at the 'change in Manchester.
Next one anyone?

What can you tell me about this sauce label?

It's red and yellow with black writing and came from a sauce bottle!
The sauce was produced in Winona, Canada and is intended for sale in Quebec because the Froggies living in an English speaking country are too thick to learn the English language.

It's OK, I'll save you the trouble China. Sorry about the poor quality of this image but can you tell me why this aeroplane is leading a parade of military vehicles and private cars?

Hi P. I always thought that Sally was riding a mustang horse. Never gave a thought to Mustang cars.

No, it's not a well-know fighter plane like a Mustang but a good old Percival Provost trainer which most RAF jet pilots will have done their initial training in. It's leading armoured vehicles and private cars - what could be the connection?

Living in Barlick you're excused for being so loyal to RR but they're not the only company that made engines for aircraft, armoured vehicles and private cars!
Gloria wrote: 05 Sep 2017, 08:11 Just a wild guess, is it a military funeral procession for a pilot??
Sorry I didn't reply to you too Gloria. No, it's not a military funeral procession for a pilot, although I can see why you'd think that. We went to RAF Duxford in, I think, the 1980s and I took the picture on an old camera, hence the poor resolution. We'd gone to visit the museum but it was a happy coincidence that an event was held on that same day by a car club. And that provides another clue!

Alvis Car and Aero Engine Company I reckon then, The aircraft used the radial Alvis Leonides engine and the cars will be of the Alvis marque.

Spot on! It was a special meeting of the Alvis Owners' Club and they wanted to display as many examples of Alvis-engined machines as they could attract. We drooled over some of the cars and had that immediate `I want one' feeling. They don't make `em like that any more. The club members don't stint on the venues - they were at the Midland Hotel in Morecambe last weekend.

I have to hold my hand up and say that I had to look at the Wiki for the aircraft. Penny dropped when I read the specs and the engine type. :extrawink:
