Wind the clock on 10 years and here's the Millenium Bench on the top of Weets.

Image

Well used, but 14 years on looking a bit worse for wear, the plate commemorating the millenium has long gone from the back. Good bench from Merrits at Skipton, probably originally pressure treated but could do with a little TLC and a coat of preservative if there's a bit of brass in the budget.

Not forgotten just yet, but about to pass in to history I believe. The Fosters Arms Bus Terminus appears to have ended its life this morning, there have been no Mainline Buses down here today and the Town Bus is now "picking up" on Foster Road. At the weekend a load of temporary steel fencing was delivered to the adjacent site, and the phone box by the bus shelter was stripped of its working parts ages ago. It is possible that the land by the Fosters Arms has been sold for building as the for sale notices have been removed. It could be that it is going to be extremely noisy down here at some point as the bus turning area is at least 10" thick steel reinforced concrete.

We down here are all fully aware of the proposed development, and have generally accepted what it will mean. For us it will mean no more nasty confrontations over the missuse of the site which would frequently spill over onto our property. The Bus Terminus is now fenced off.

My friends Roger and Martha Paas visiting with part of the wild bunch on Letcliffe. Billy Parsons with the walking stick, I forget the name of the other man who has since died. Nice to see Jack as well.... There wasn't enough room for all the wild bunch on one form so I got on to Colin Patten at Leisure and Parks and asked him to put two forms together. He took the point and did it.

You did Cathy! I still miss Jack, so sad that he was so badly damaged before I got him. Here's a pic your sister did of us.... July 2005, can't believe it is over 8 years ago!

In regard to the now fenced off bus terminus, the local post box which is mounted on the end of the bus shelter, is now behind the fence. It should have been sealed off after the last collection on Saturday, unless it has been emptied since, one wonders about any mail posted over the last weekend. At present the nearest post box is now the one by the shops on Gisburn Rd.

Thanks Peter. Claire Teall raised this at the town council meeting last night and I've had a call about it.

Royal Mail locally say they knew nothing about the postbox being blocked off. They accessed the box the day the fencing went up and emptied it.

I'm trying to get Royal Mail to provide an alternative pdq.

Click to enlarge. Map of 'Loose Games' quarry at Tubber Hill, now the caravan park. I've often wondered why 'Loose Games'. The only thing I can think of is a venue for games to rough to be played in the village. Or is it a corruption?

If you follow the line of the old medieval track across Letcliffe you come to these stones used as a stile. Probably re-used for this and God alone knows how old they are.

Old stones that have been reused tell stories. The trick is to work out what that previous use was. This clashing gate on the garden fronts of Wellhouse Square is a case in point. Obviously reused but what for and where?

A lot of the stones used to construct the paths on Whernside (from Ribblehead) and Ingleborough (from Chapel le Dale) have varying sizes of stone slabs that a have obviously seen some form of previous industrial life. Lots have round or square holes in which at some point must have had a fixing of some sort in. Every time they assist my ascent I wonder what tales they would be able to tell from their previous usage.

Stones always tell a story and they weren't moved any further than necessary. Always look at the walls for re-used stone....

This piece of wall on the road to Blacko near the top of Slipper Hill contains demolition stone from an early building. Question is what building?

I think some of the flags used by the National Park etc to repair and reinforce paths up the Yorkshire Three Peaks could confuse future archaeologists. Many of them are from salvage yards and have been helicoptered in for the work. It's possible some might have come from the demolition of Bancroft?
