Tizer wrote: 05 Sep 2018, 08:47 You can put a sheet of something in the gaps and tighten the screws to hold it. But a sheet of what, and why?
Or they can be fitted on to the edge of a sheet forming edge guides or end stops. I'm guessing something to do with metalwork.

I'm thinking something to do with glass/glazing.

Sorry Maz, nothing to do with glass. Tiz and China are on the right track but not paper or sheet metal. Stick with metal though!

Could they be clamps for holding the flange of a RSJ to one of your machines and that explains the tapered section?

So it's for making your ruler stand up on edge?

So you can mark or measure more exactly. I'm guessing, I haven't seen anything like this before.

Right, I shall knock it on the head.

If you want the true centre line of a regular cylinder, say for marking a key seat out, the old school way was to use one of these, a key seat ruler. As you can see it automatically sits true on the cylinder. The three little Starrett clips I showed are for converting a larger rule into a Key Seat rule for a longer keyway.
Next for shaving?

I've seen this before..... A little voice in my head tells me it is the Burton Brothers, don't know why. Are they famous retailers? Brook Brothers? Wilkes Brothers of Rover Cars fame?

Not any of the brothers mentioned but they are brothers, I'll bet that most mature people will have used their products or seen them being used.

The shops behind are Primark and PC World. Anything to do with those retailers?

Sorry Tizer nothing to do with any of the current outlets although the statues are in a very up-to-date pedestrian shopping area. The main business which men usually used was set up in this street a long time ago.

Another clue for those who read newspapers and watch TV.

Now we are getting somewhere. The fire was Littlewoods building not many days ago and Barclay brothers bought out ???
Viv Nicholson would have still been working in a factory but for these people.

Were they called Moores?

Ah - now I get it - not Morecambe and Wise, but the Moores brothers.

John Moores

Quite a story. . .

Wendy came in with a short head. Tripps finished with a flourish but both PanBiker and China did a lot of the running.
Yes, a day out at the World museum Liverpool to see the Terracotta Warriors, down to the shopping centre for lunch and getting rid of a bit of money. I must say I was most impressed with the clean and tidy precincts, sat listening to a blues band for half an hour while Mrs P got rid of the surplus cash. I can recommend Liverpool for a day out.

I met one of the Moores once when I did a job for them, getting rid of Dee Mill engine house. I was invited down to Liverpool to meet him because he liked the report I had done, he gave me a history of the firm. I can't remember if that was the building I went to...... I should have realised it was them.

And to quote Nicholas Parsons on `Just a Minute': `Stanley and Tizer came in a very strong joint fifth place'.

OK, you came in 5th place and I came in a very strong 6th place (i.e got nothing right).

Is the new object a funnel for filtering something?

Do you put your String in it?
Actually, I would go so far as to suggest string inside, and pulled out the hole. You could stick your pen in the top hole, as it would sit inside the string, and you could throw your paper clips on too ( they would grasp magnetically).

Have I won the holiday or the car? :laugh5:

Sorry, not a funnel and not for string either (although I can see why you said that.......).
