Flies...my father used to go berserk if he saw a fly in his kitchen. It wasn't so much about hygiene, rather that he couldn't cope with fies. You could tell hygiene wasn't paramount - he'd swat it with a rolled up newspaper or a kitchen cloth and leave fly goo behind! He was a funny mixture, always trying to act macho but upset by a fly. When he was in the garden he couldn't cope with `prickles' (thistles) and nettles. When we tried to get him to wear gardening gloves it went against his macho principles.

This is a lovely programme, well worth listening to...
Natural Histories: Pike Pike
`Brett Westwood was twelve years old when he first encountered a pike between the pages of T.H.White's book, The Sword in the Stone and yet the description of the pitiless monster still raises the hairs on the back of Brett's neck. In this, the first in a new series of Natural Histories, Brett has an unnerving encounter with a living pike, and meets an angler, a taxidermy collector, a diver and fish artist, and a heraldry expert as he ventures into dark waters to explore our relationship with this fearsome and predatory fish, which is so powerfully captured by Ted Hughes in his poem, Pike.'

I'll listen to that later Tiz..... A fearsome predator!
I was once walking through the Outback with my mate John and the sweat soaked back of his tee shirt was a mat of flies. Being English I brushed them off. He told me not to do that, while they were on your back they weren't flying round your head! He pointed out that mine was the same! Lesson learned and remembered. Big Harry told me that one of the main attractions for insects was the CO2 in our breath.......

My attention was grabbed yesterday by Liam Fox claiming that 'Trump protesters are an embarrassment to themselves'. So much for free speech. We're going down a slippery road.

I noted that as well Tiz. However, I take very little notice of anything the good doctor says, I have no confidence in him at all. PE still keeps hinting about him and Werrity.... They know something we don't!
Visit by Mick and Stig. Stig and Jack didn't get on at all well with each other! He's a lot bigger that I thought he was..... (Stig that is....) Mick brought me some lovely bases for three of my engines.

My attention was caught yesterday by a shopping trip to the new Aldi supermarket in Barlick. Very impressive place and saves me having to drive over to Skipton once a fortnight. :good:

Indeed Kev, did you notice that it is the opposite way round to other Aldi stores. I liked the layout, better shelves than in the other stores and very wide isles between. The car park is very spacious as well with wide lanes between the ranks of bays.

If I could fault the site in any way it would be the exit onto Skipton Road. I think they could have designed in a mini roundabout in the corner of the car park which would be better for traffic flow. I suppose there may be a conflict though with the garage entrance and exits and the pedestrian entrance and pelican. That aside I think it will be a real asset to the town.

I can see the Skipton Rd junction being awkward at particular times, I will keep an eye on when is best to go there :-)

Having just come back from the new Aldi, I'm 100% with Ian. Much easier getting out of the car because the bays are wider. And yes the junction at Skipton road is bad. On the plus side its a lot cheaper than the Co-op. I think I'll try and convert to their own brand of 'Gold' coffee, its nowhere near as good as Nescafe Gold blend but its less than a third of the cost....

I don't know if this still applies but Aldi used to sell some great hazelnut chocolate, brand name was Milka.

Milka is available at Morrisons. It had been on offer at 50p but it went up to the £1 Mark and now bounces around £1.10 and £1.20 thanks to the pound euro exchange rate

Rain..... I was thinking that if I was fighting a moor fire that heavy rain would have been a godsend.
Aldi. Not been. The Coop still wins on the grounds of convenient walking for me.
Werrity. Thanks for that Tiz..... One of these days we'll find out what PE knows!

That made me smile since Aldi must have spent literally millions on TV ads to get that message across. Remember - "I like this one, but I also like that one" - with a much lower price. Seems one visit is worth a thousand adverts.

I still think Lidl is better though.

I just like the idea of not having to go out of town for the usual tins, cereals, soap powders etc. I've found the prices between Lidl and Aldi to be very similar so the location is a winner for me.

The new lad, Nathan, who has taken over Steve Hirst's butchers has made an impression. He's still making Steve's pork sausage and has added a few new products, I had some very nice lamb koftas last week.

Aldi's baked beans are much better value than Heinz - far more beans in tin, same with peas.

Yes - you're right, convenience is important. We are having a large Aldi being built nearby - should be ready by Autumn. It was going to be a Waitrose, but they pulled out, and Aldi jumped in. They said they would go ahead only if Marks and Spencer's food outlet also came. They did. Not sure what the marketing logic is - maybe they think that the M&S customers will see the value and be converts.

It's just round the corner from a largish Tesco. It will make their eyes water.

I agree about the beans MOH. Heinz would be my last choice.

Terraced house?? It was once a magnificent community hall with sprung dance floor, billiard hall etc . Unfortunately it was neglected by LCC and has dry rot, wet rot and an asbestos problem too...

All part of the destruction of the libraries and museums service.......It's a public disgrace and possibly the most short-sighted 'economy' I have ever seen.
As for 'terraced house'..... They sent some intern out on the bus to look at it and that's the quality of service you get.....
