I still don't understand what it is used for. If your phone is hands-free doesn't it just lie on a surface? Or you could prop it up against a book? Oh, sorry. I forgot - people who use smartphones don't have books! (Only joking, haha  )

Berry's sawmill at Sough in 1989. Can anyone tell me what is unusual about this scene. The mill was driven by a gas engine and shafting.......

No Tiz, shavings..... Clue, concentrate on the fact that all the machinery is driven by shafting and belts.....

Then is it the fact that I can't see any shafting or belts?

You're there Tiz, sorry I strung it out. Very unusually, all under the floor.
Next for shaving?

Not a clue but it reminded me of this:

My mother had a Flit gun,
It was not devoid of charm.
A bit of Flit shot out of it,
The rest went up her arm.

Is it Spring, shining light on the world and banishing the Winter?

A lady with a lamp and a hammer in her hand illuminating the earth.... Is she coming to break the ice?
China, Flit guns did that didn't they!

Spring blossoms around the bottom of her dress, and her Spring Bonnet has shades of our Sydney Opera House in it's design.
Perhaps the hammer is to tilt the Earth a bit for Northern/Southern seasons.
I see UK depicted...

Reminded me of the woodcuts by William Blake but these tended to have a religious flavour.

China, thanks for the Pam Ayres quote, I always enjoy her stories and poems. Maz is right that the lady is shining a light on the world and Stanley states, correctly, that she carries a hammer as well as a lamp; Maz suggests the hammer is to tilt the earth to give the seasons. That's getting very close to the answer so I'll tell you that the drawing is titled `The Light of Science Dispelling the Darkness which covered the World' and it was by Henry de la Beche. But who is the lady?

I've cheated and looked it up! Amazing what you learn on OGFB.

I haven't cheated but I'll have a guess.... The 18th century Enlightenment?
Or, come to think, the Greek Goddess of technical advancement? Steam? Is that what the clouds are?

Oooh, you're a wicked lot! :extrawink: The man who created the drawing was the geologist and palaeontologist Henry de la Beche, director and founder (1835) of the Geological Survey. he often used cartoons to get across his point and also to irritate his main adversary, another famous geologist, Roderick Impey Murchison. The cartoon above `portrays Lady Murchison in the fashion of the time and carrying a geological hammer'. She explored geological sites with her husband. There's plenty of interesting information about de la Beche and Murchison on Wikipedia. For anyone who wants deeper information on de la Beche, the Geological Survey and his contributions to geology there is a lot on this BGS web site: LINK There's more on the cartoons here: LINK We shouldn't be too surprised that a geologist can draw cartoons. One of the first things the traditional geologist was taught was to draw the rock scenes that they study. Have a look here and you'll see some good drawings by de la Beche: LINK
