Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Correct Gloria, I was beginning to think that people only limited themselves to specific subjects, The second part, which I know nothing about, is the real mystery. You have to be careful with these painted plaques. Often the 'restorer' paints in what they think the inscription should read consequently laying a false trail for everyone else. I can see this as a long running item so if anyone would like to post another 'Mystery Object please feel free to do so.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
You asked for further information P. I doubt if I can tell you anything you don't know but here goes.
Until 1815 there was still a remnant of the old Village Green on that side of what is now Church Street. The land beyond (and behind it) was owned and farmed by Wellhouse Farm on the opposite side of Church Street. In 1815 the local board decided to sell the Green and apply the proceeds towards culverting the troublesome ford in Walmsgate at the bottom of Lamb Hill. This resulted in the building of that block of houses of which this is one. I don't know who NI.C could be, Nicholas X perhaps? The new buildings all have different dates and slightly different styles so perhaps they were all relatively well-off individuals who bought plots. This was when Church Street as we know it now replaced Back Lane (Philip Street) as the main West/East through route in the town centre.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Could NI.C have referred to the name of an early building society? Some of my ancestors in Mellor lived in a row of cottages built with funds from such a society in about 1810.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Doesn't fit any of the Friendly Societies in Barlick Tiz. On the whole I think it most likely it is the initials of a person.

Yan, tan, tether...
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I never knew there were so many variations of this. Yours seems to be Borrowdale or Scottish.

I'm hoping this is a clue or else I'm miles off-topic!

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Lots of variants depending on locality. All over the North of England. Mine passed to me by my dad who learnt it from his father, my granddad of course who brought the family down from Dent. Previous generations of the family (farmers) hail from Hawes, Semmerwater, Bainbridge etc, Higher Dales.
Counting system is interesting if you notice that it changes from a base 10 system at 15 then the higher numbers are each 1 added to 15 so its a combination of base 10 and base 15, don't know why?
Can't see what the link is to Stanley's object though, I still reckon it's a SOS talisman.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
That numbering answer baffled me as well Ian but of course you are right. I can't get anything past you lot!
In case anyone hasn't come across them, it unscrews and contains vital information for medics treating you as a John Doe with no records, like allergies etc. You can get them as bracelets as well and they are recognised world-wide.
