Incident at the care home this afternoon. I had to explain to a Chinese carer, who was asking a Pakistani lady what she wanted for tomorrow's lunch, what 'Goujons of Pollock' meant. Neither had a clue
'Tell her it's posh fish fingers' I said . - She had the chicken.

Lazily searching some recipe sites for a Sour Cream type sauce, as I fancy it on Chicken Breast tonight, possibly with fresh mushrooms and a smattering of Black Pepper...
My cooking often begins with a vision of something. Just have to cook it now.

Mine begins with what I have in stock.... The stew died yesterday and the small teatime portion was augmented by a cottage cheese and tomato butty. I've saved the bacon for today.

Had both slices of bacon with two eggs in a man-sized bacon butty for dinner. Tea was a pea soup with lamb. I slow roasted a blade of lamb and at the same time put a pan of dried peas, sugar, bicarb and salt on the stove to cook slowly for a few hours. De-boned the blade, chopped two onions and dropped the lot in the peas pudding with a small can of tomato purée and some more seasoning. By teatime it was a healthy thick mixture! Had the last of the cottage cheese and a tomato on the remaining crust of bread and topped up with a small helping of the pea soup. It's set solid this morning!

The Haggis is a noble beast......
Extended the stew a bit with mixed veg so I had enough left for a stew butty for dinner. The bread is in the machine. Cheese and tomato butty for tea?

Haggis available 365 days a year in my super market, a slice on my cooked breakfast of a weekend goes down a treat, Yesterday I searched the freezer for two missing game pies from christmas. Found the pies and also discovered two wood pigeons, must have been in there 16 months, I shall try to copy a recipe I saw on Masterchef for Pigeon o croute.

Sausage and poached egg butty for tea and a meat pie. Popped a nice piece of Dexter brisket in the oven and cooked it slowly all night. Beef butties will be on the menu today. The gravy and fat is separating in the fridge, I can see a nice veggy soup on the cards later.

Hot brisket butty for dinner. Rest of joint cubed and put in the gravy with an onion, a bulb of garlic, mixed veggies and lentils. Made a nice soup and I had some cold on a butty for tea. Good butty filling!

Last of the stew for dinner and a frozen one out of the fridge for tea. I've popped a loaf in this morning and will take a view later..... Definitely weather for what the supermarkets describe as 'hearty meals'!

Sausage butty for dinner and a frozen stew for tea. Started a new stew with rump steak, onions and lots of veg. Simmered quietly away all evening as I watched TV, no leccy burned. It had a rest overnight and another boil this morning and we are OK for today's winter warmer!
More on the girl at Atherton. She had visited her friend who went out and left her alone with the dogs. The police say that they suspect the dogs were 2xStaffs and 2xBull mastiffs plus one other which wasn't shot on site. Why does anyone need dogs like that!

That was posted in the wrong topic wasn't it. Never mind.... Just chucked 6 more small onions in the stew, you can't have too many onions in a winter warmer!

I was busy with other things this afternoon, so threw some chopped cabbage, peeled and quartered spuds, sliced carrot and a cup of chicken stock in my favourite stoneware dish and popped it in the oven on low for two hours. By dinner time I was free to poach some fresh pieces of Tasmanian Salmon in a Special White Sauce ( with Parsley, Dill, Tarragon, Chives and Black Pepper). This sauce is something i invented myself and thickens beautifully because i lightly flour the fish before adding. As it thickens, i melt a tiny bit of cheese in it, which makes it creamy smooth.Popped the veg on the plate, Salmon on top, and Sauce over the top.
Yum.

The soup or the ironing??

Buttered chicken curry, rice & naan bread tonight.

It feels hard having to think up menus after being spoilt on holiday!! The food in the hotel we go to is first class - the hotel is adult only, catering for the British, right on the beach in Palma Nova. Some people have been going over 20 years (I don't blame them). Full English breakfast if you want it with porridge, black pudding etc. Roast beef & yorkshire puddings on Sunday!. Bread & butter pudding, apple crumble, rice pudding etc for sweets. There is a roast every day, plus Spanish dishes for those who want a taste of the country, lots of salads etc and home made soups for starters - who could wish for more?
Say only a little but say it well.
