So all that is of issue here is an order (highly unlikely to be processed as I understand it) sitting on some server somewhere on the planet. It may never go away if the company has ceased trading.

Amazon the agent already know you wish to cancel, no money has changed hands, so why wait?

If on the outside chance you end up with two (which is highly unlikely), Amazon should pay for a collection as you have already informed them that you don't want it. You could always refuse delivery which would also solve the problem.

Each to his own Ian. Amazon will remove it eventually. I am in no rush and this way my life is uncomplicated..... The older I get, the more I avoid complications. No stress!

Amazon are taking things seriously. They tell me now that the order will be removed if there is no delivery by August 1st. I shall watch the situation and believe it when I see it.

The order has been removed from the site and Amazon have mailed me to confirm it is now extinct. I can now go out and search for my lens.... Goody!

Later after a short furtle. I've found a more modern lens with VR and same focal lengths as the other. It's the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR, sold by Amazon themselves and best of all, £15 cheap[er than the other one I ordered. It's brand new and is £99 including p&p. Not in stock till August 3rd but delivery date of 10?13 August. No rush so no sweat. I'll report back later but I think we have a chance of cracking this one now! (Ken Rockwell reckons it's the bee's knees)

Disturbing communication from Amazon this morning re lens. It has arrived earlier than expected at their warehouse and delivery has been brought forward a week, could be here on August 3rd. I doubt it, they were ar5e covering with the original delivery date

You old cynic! Two mails since, one to say delivery would be early, one to say it has been dispatched by Royal Mail. On previous experience this could be delivery today..... Never had so much service!

Still photography related but I have an "engineering" request for you, Stanley. I need a couple of stands for my studio lighting, I have the "standard" telescopic stands that came with the lighting kit but I need to use 2 lights at floor level. I'm looking for something similar to the image below. The centre fitting will need to be specific for my lighting and the area taken up by the "footprint" need be no bigger than about a foot. I'm open to suggestion?

The lens arrived at 9am this morning and I've had to get the book out to read the setup up. I think I've got there! Done one or two pics and the VR is wonderful, low light pics are OK. I shall be snapping away this morning.....

That's excellent, thank you. I'm going to cut a couple of dinner place sized pieces of three-quarter MDF for the bases. I can drill a recessed hole in the centre, for the spigot, and fit some rubber feet on the bottom. I'll sort one day next week to bob round with a sample.

Spent most of yesterday sorting out settings on lens and camera. I'm sure I've missed something but I think I have got somewhere near. The auto focus and VR is brilliant. I did some available light pics that would have been impossible before. Sorry about the subject but I did this shot hand-held in low light, no flash and I think it shows how well the geriatric aids are working...

A very good self portrait, I like it.

The recess will be more like a 6mm hole, limited drill sizes . The actual spigot is no thicker that half an inch and 3 inches long.

Yes, but Shadrack and Duxbury were also funeral directors, and though fictitious - maybe the author Keith Waterhouse had a Barlick connection?

The original Briggs and Duxbury firm in 1931 sprang from two blokes who worked for a local building contractor and joiner. These firms had all the skills necessary for coffins and headstones and they were almost always the first funeral directors.

My Uncle, Bob Lambert (Robert Lambert Ltd - Builders, Joiners and Funeral Directors - Tel B'wick 2369 - Day - B'wick 2080 Night) was a master coffin builder and french polisher. The workshop when it was at the side of the railway sidings on Skipton Road in the 50's and then later at the gasworks site had a coffin room where the component parts were stored (all made in-house). The polishing room was sacrosanct and woe betide anyone who opened the door and let dust in. Bob used to polish after hours to reduce the risk of contamination, each successive coat drying overnight. A hand built coffin was a thing of beauty as well as a practical bit of joinery.
