Businesses spring up and then fall away. Can you remember this start up in Newtown in 2007?

Hearing about the 'wind chill factor' today, I think Damart would be more appropriate.
Maybe that's why the business is now closed. :laugh5:

It's not closed David only the retail stores. They still operate via mail order from the factory in Bingley.

I doubt if the weather has a lot of bearing on the demand for erotic lingerie but would agree that thermals were more appropriate yesterday!

Obviously little support for them in the town. Reminds me of a shop I thought must have been there forever (but wasnt) that mum went to mainly for "foundation garments" for her and her family , located in the small block of shops at the tube station in London. Being London not counting the chains like Marks and Sparks there were more similar specialists at the market in the next suburban location toward London, and another the next further away - walkable but when you had shopping it was a bus ride. Not something I really seek out and they tended to switch to buying things by mail order when the one in the tube station closed.

Barlick Corn Mill in 1994. There's a connection with lingerie which should be documented.....
A young lad called Robinson frequented the Greyhound pub. He was notable for the fact that he was very 'horsey'. He wore riding breeches and often spurs and had an entire pony stallion which he travelled to clients for stud purposes. (Yes, Barlick had it's share of characters!)
He told us a story once about Roy Laycock paying him to clean out the cottages to the left of the mill. One of them had been used by Roy's wife to store the stock in trade of a mail order operation she ran which sold erotic lingerie. The lad understood that the business wasn't doing well and he said it was no wonder. The Brassieres were defective, they all had holes in the cups...... :biggrin2:

As I have said before, I suspect many of these old images were done on a Sunday, there are so many people about and in this case children. But one man is stood in a shop doorway.... Could it be a weekday? I think it's before 1900 and notice that the road is paved with water-bound Macadam.

It's anybody's guess how long it was since this vise was first fastened to the tree next to Forty Steps. Long enough for it to be part of the tree. It disappeared when more houses were being built there about 30 years ago.

Ross Mill at Bacup at night. At one time this was a common sight in Lancashire, the great spinning mills lit up and running a night shift. A long forgotten corner..... Daniel Meadows compared them to great ships sailing up the valleys......

The view from Rainhall Road railway bridge in 1960. In the last 65 years this view has changed totally and we have forgotten what it was liked to be served by a railway connection.

North Valley Services stack at Colne in 1982 with finned top to improve draught and help smoke dispersal. I never saw any evidence that this modification worked. I have a feeling the people who benefited most were the steeplejacks who installed them!

Burnley Ironworks, engine builders, in 1917. They made very good engines but in 1917 were engaged in war production. The lathes you can see in progress of building are all specialised machines for making artillery shells.

The Pioneer car park in 2005. The large red brick, building at the fire station is still a main distribution hub for electricity, new cables were laid to it last year. The old hose drying and practice tower is the main mobile phone aerial in the town and the small brick building in the fire station yard houses all the switch gear for the masts.
We only have one fire engine now, this is seen as enough by LCC who manage the service.

Three Barlick cyclists in about 1900. I think the man in the centre is Leonard Holdsworth, a local manufacturer and one of the directors of the Calf Hall Shed Company. The bikes would be expensive so it is almost certain the other two are also manufacturers. I am always struck by the polished shoes and the acetylene lamps on sprung brackets, they were obviously used to riding after dark.

The bike on the right of the photo looks like a serious machine! The saddle seems to be positioned very high and I can't see any cross bar - I guess that's because the rider wouldn't be able to get on if it did have one!
