Re: Pothole Parade
I noticed that they have not raised the manhole covers on Skipton Road, was the road not due to be surface dressed after the re-instatements?

Re: Pothole Parade
Reported; fault no 40005 on the online map. The 'status' of such faults can be checked on THIS SITE.
On gritting, I've got the following reply when I've asked about last week's chaotic conditions. I've still not been told what the rate of spread was, just that it's 'in line' with their 'matrix'. I've nothing but praise for the gritting crews, I'm questioning the instructions they are given...
Good morning David
Thank you for your e mail in relation to our gritting operations from the 28th
I can respond as follows:
28th
From 7.30am, we gritted all our priority routes in East Lancashire
From 4.00pm – 9.00pm, we patrolled and gritted as required on routes affect by the sleet / snow.
From 9.00pm, we gritted all our priority routes in East Lancashire
29th
From Midnight – 7.30am, we patrolled and gritted as required on routes affect by the sleet / snow. In Pendle this was a difficult period as in addition to the snow that was falling we had to deal with the high winds causing drifting and on some we had to take vehicle off the lower routes to help out on the higher routes
From 7.30am, we gritted all our priority routes in East Lancashire
All our treatments were in line with the matrices in our winter service plan
Whilst I accept that conditions were far from ideal on Thursday morning, we have to accept that the salt works by mixing with the moisture on the road surface to create a saline solution which prevents formation of frost or ice
However, in prolonged periods of snowfall the snow can fall at a rate faster than the salt can mix with the snow which means the snow may accumulate and as a result some disruption to traffic movements is unavoidable.
All we can do then is to remove the accumulated snow by ploughing and then apply further grit to the roads.
I do not think that we could have do anything different and praise should be given to our winter team for their commitment to delivering the service.
I also feel that we should be reminding the motorists that they have a responsibility to adjust their driving to suit the conditions.
Regards

Re: Pothole Parade
Thanks Ian, the road won't be surfaced dressed until warmer weather. Am asking about the three manhole lids that need lifting.

Re: Pothole Parade
Pity the like button was voted out, it was useful on occasion. Anyway thanks for the reply, it just puzzled me slightly as I had picked up that the repairs were only half the job.

Re: Pothole Parade
Could it be that the 'matrices' need referring back to the accountants and revising upwards? What we need to know is not new official jargon but how the rate of delivery relates to what used to be done....
Later after our walk. Some jerk has broken the corner off what looks like a top stone from one of the planters in Town Square. They have smashed it into the flags. I suppose we should be grateful they didn't smash a shop window with it.... CCTV?

Re: Pothole Parade
Another light has gone AWOL in the Pioneer car park David. In addition to the three mercury lamps over the walkway, the sodium lamp between the toilets and the entrance ramp to the store is out this morning.

Fed up of chasing the car park lights Stanley; have done so again...
Yesterday was the good news of Ghyll Lane resurfacing.
Today, the bad news is the bitmac choked gulleys that the contractors have left.

Re: Pothole Parade
Either the contractors should put this right, or the cost of doing so deducted from the payment. I'm staggered they didn't just cover the grates.

Some big holes reappearing on Bleara Road, and places where the grates haven't been raised up to the new level.

Sounds like contractors cutting corners on very tightly priced contracts.....

A small victory in the campaign to cut down on street clutter...
This rotten road sign has been removed and the sign fixed to the wall instead.

How was it allowed to get like that in the first place?

...not enough money for maintenance (or the impact of dog pee...).
You may recall me having to campaign for several years to get some with electric in them replaced.
All a consequence of a £200 million backlog of road repairs in the county.

Re: Pothole Parade
I'm afraid you are right on the money there! Something that struck me yesterday was the close proximity (6") of two new standards opposite the ginnel down the side of Nutters Newsagents... One carrying a lamp and the other a one way sign. Why couldn't the sign be on the lamp standard? Some archaic division of responsibility?

Re: Pothole Parade
Don't think it's a demarcation dispute...
Not certain, but there may be two things in play. Legislation requires some signs to be lit; maybe that the required lighting isn't possible on a lamp post? (Don't laugh...). There may also be the 'wind loading' reason; extra things on a lamp post may take the wind load beyond design limits. (Again, don's laugh!). I've had both these quoted to me when I've asked about similar situations elsewhere.

Re: Pothole Parade
Just a query, in this day and age would it not be more cost effective to make more street furniture out of carbon fibre or laminated fibre glass? Thinking more of the vertical post type stuff such as lamp standards and signposts. Colour could be embedded in the compound so no painting and dog pee proof.

Re: Pothole Parade
Talking of posts, I'll put a picture of a broken one on the what attracted my attention...
Since they patched Skipton Road, I've been struggling to get pictures of bad potholes around Barlick; there appear to be many fewer than this time last year. Please let me know if you spot any!
A particular bete noir of mine for several years has been Calf Hall Road at the junction with Walmsgate. As part of the preparation of the Monkroyd/Colne Road area for future surface dressing, this area was planed out on Friday (together with extensive lengths on Monkroyd). Yippee!

No sooner than the words had left my keyboard, and I had a report of a bad pothole at Bracewell... it's that big, it's got a tree growing out of it!

Re: Pothole Parade
Reported online Stanley, ref 45143. Let me know when/if dealt with.
(Lately, LCC have been on the ball with street lamp repairs, but one near the zebra crossing on Skipton Road has been out for over a fortnight. Have chased them up about that one.)
