Thank you for emailing him, it would be great to contact my cousin (s) he also has a brother. I have very vague recollections of staying on a farm with them but they are a little older than me. An untimely death, a re-marriage and a bad philosophy on life deprived us all of family connections. Thanks to to technology some threads may be picked up! I'll keep watching from not so sunny Ilkley.

I'm amazed and somewhat emotional I have to admit.
I've filled in a few gaps for him in a lengthy email regarding his wayward Grandfather which neither of us knew; he can't have been all bad as he was awarded the Victoria Cross for bravery.
Thank you so much it's fantastic....I don't know how my nephew came across your site but I'll find out.

I'll agree about Wendy but don't trust a word I say.......

I see that my cousin beat me to the post with thanks.
A lot of facts have been shared and some photo's sent, all good.
I now have a more comprehensive detail of the family tree thanks to Wendy's previous legwork.
I was able to find a photo of our great grandparents and their 6 children to send to 'Cloggy'; I wasn't acquainted with them either until I peeled the photo out of the book and saw their names written in my Dad's inimitable handwriting on the reverse.
I am now trying to find a photo of Annie but can't recollect any of her.
Thank you Wendy and of course Stan who seemed to be on excellent terms with my Dad.

An update of our progress.... cousin Walter currently living in Scotland (after a whole working life living in Hong Kong) was unaware of any existing cousins other than myself and my brother but was delighted and is very pro-active compiling the family tree. 'Cloggy' and himself are now in contact. I've fortunately found a beautiful photo, the only one I have of Annie Spencer 'Cloggy's Mother, firstly sent from my ipad and an enlargement is in now the post. I expect a tear will be shed as 'Cloggy' lost his Mother at the age of 5 and regretfully had no photo of her as an adult. Wendy and Stan, thank you for enabling all of this.

Never thought I'd be so grateful to technology and t'internet, and boards such as this. Here I am in my dotage and splendid Italian isolaton, surrounded by friends and cousins I've never met in the flesh. Also starting to receive snail mail letters from both Dinsdales/Spencers/Crabtrees. Viva oneguyfrombarlick.

The three first cousins are in regular contact by email exchanging information and photo's so it's really a big thank you to the site for enabling this.
A comprehensive family tree going back to the late 1700's has been established by Walter Spencer, pretty amazing.
I note that we have all spent a good part of our life working/living abroad, coincidence or simply in the genes!
Cloggy living in Italy
Walter in Hong Kong, now retired and returned to his native Scotland
Myself I lived in France for 30 years and returned to UK
Michael and his wife lived in Spain but have also recently returned to UK

Our future descendants will now have access to this information.....I know that my late Father was attempting to establish a family tree prior to his death; I've found bits of paper with names, dates and question marks, how he would have relished what we've unearthed!

Hi guys, bit of a long shot reviving this thread but I’m a spencer from Burnley, we had a farm in the family just up bacup road across from a cross that sits on a hillside.

My dad is really vague about he’s family’s history so Iv taken it upon myself to do some digging. I do know 2 addresses on colbran street are still in the family and have been for a long time, possibly back to the time when the houses would have been used for cotton workers. I believe my great grandma was also called violet, there was too many similarities to not comment, I can help with more names and addresses for anybody still interested, I believe my family have a connection to the water up widdop reservoir. my great grandad was apparently a ganger and may have travelled to Africa in ww2 although this is vague information I have been told. Maybe you folk can piece it all together. Cheers !
