I have no experience of searching for people in South Africa so can't really advise except to warn you that Ancestry Premium membership is UK only! You need the Worldwide membership package to see most international records. I only have Premium Ancestry but worldwide Findmypast.
I use both regularly and if I was forced to give up one I don't know which it would be!

I think the prices you are seeing Gloria are cheaper because they know you're already a member. When I looked as a non-member they were all higher. But I'm now in with the cheapest `Free for 14 days and then £10.99 a month'. That won't do my South Africa work but I'll update all my UK ancestors first and then upgrade to do the SA stuff.

A question about Ancestry. If I build my family tree on the Ancestry.co.uk web site will it be there permanently. For example if I decide to take a break for a year and don't renew my subscription, but then eventually want to return to it and subscribe again will it still be there and available to me? I'm not sure if I'd be able to re-subscribe with the same username etc. I assume Gloria will be doing this now?

The answer must be yes as I don't think you need a subscription to build an Ancestry tree.

The answer is yes, I’ve had access to my tree on ancestry even when I’ve not been a member.

My thanks to both of you, that's very good news. Being a user of Linux instead of Windows I've had the problem that if I made a family tree in a Linux application it's possible I wouldn't be able to share it with Windows users. Setting it up on Ancestry will remove that danger.

Incidentally, back in 2019 Wendy helped me by contacting through Ancestry one of my distant relatives (geographically as well as genetically) and giving her my email address. We touched base but nothing much came of it. Now that I can search Ancestry I find she has her side of the family in detail back into the 1800s. I can now tell her we share a g-g-grandfather born in 1827 and I can give her earlier generations back to about 1712!

I found it almost as fascinating as making steam engines, but not quite! That's why I stopped once I had sorted my lot out as far back as the 19th century with my Challenger ancestor being arrested for seditious riot in Ashton under Lyne. (He was a Chartist.)

I've now signed up to the full worldwide membership so I can research my South African ancestors but while on the UK only version I've pushed back my father's ancestors from the 1700s into the 1600s.

I was amused by one Parish Clerk's record for a birth in Mellor that said that the lady in question had `also admitted to 7 other bastard births'. As far as I know she's not one of my ancestors - but then how can we tell when we don't know what names those children went under (and how many survived)! Yes, there's nowt so fascinating as family history!

Peter, I can remember when I was a young lad my dad once told me that if anyone ever called me an ill-bred bastard I was not to argue with them. It puzzled me at the time but many years later I found out that he was quite right. I have a certificate that proves I am a bastard and it has never worried me....

I've found this web page interesting and helpful for family history research. I now understand why some baptisms in the early 1700s are given as, for example `1720/21'. Parish Registers
