I think the nearest to Barlick is in Nelson.

A bit too far for a piece of cheese. Even Colliers Cheese

Another music indulgence. I remember that Ian does this one as one of his entertainment pieces. Normally the YouTube videos are plain vocal but this one shows a bit of action with it. Enjoy. Big Iron.

I quite enjoyed that and noted the slip up when the Ranger Shoots the outlaw. His revolver was shown as ejecting the cartridge cases...... :biggrin2:

Sorry Ken, I like Marty Robbins and Big Iron and I have done it on occasion. But my party pieces at Karaoke are El Paso from Marty. Mack the Knife and Somewhere Beyond the Sea from Bobby Darren, Mona Lisa from Nat and Islands in the Stream from Dolly and Kenny along with Sally. In the past, "mates" have signed me up to do He Ain't Heavy by the Hollies, cunningly difficult to sing but I make my own key changes up on that one. :extrawink:

A spot of quiet music. Nothing fancy just good wholesome noise. Amazing how all these ladies get into the act.

Saw one on the car park a couple of years ago but sadly no Mustang Sally.

Now you've done it! Thank you. This is good - and I just surfed from this to a lot of good 'toons'.

I rediscovered these two and I do believe I've got something in my eye. . . .

As I recall the second one was written by Salford lad Ewan McColl. He of The Ballad of John Axon, and and the shoals of herrings.

This is more of a bit of useless information than a recommendation.
Ian mentioned Bobby Darin and Mack the Knife. It rang a bell with me that this was a German song 'The Haifisch song, I've posted the words for comparison.

"Mackie Messeer" Lyrics Text: Bertolt Brecht Musik: Kurt Weill

Bertolt Brecht's (1898-1956) lyrics are an adaptation of Elisabeth Hauptmann's German translation of John Gay's "The Beggar's Opera."

German Lyrics
Direct Translation by Hyde Flippo

Und der Haifisch, der hat Zähne
Und die trägt er im Gesicht
Und MacHeath, der hat ein Messer
Doch das Messer sieht man nicht
And the shark, he has teeth
And he wears them in his face
And MacHeath, he has a knife
But the knife you don't see

An 'nem schönen blauen Sonntag
Liegt ein toter Mann am Strand
Und ein Mensch geht um die Ecke,
Den man Mackie Messer nennt
On a beautiful blue Sunday
Lies a dead man on the Strand*
And a man goes around the corner
Whom they call Mack the Knife

Und Schmul Meier bleibt verschwunden
Und so mancher reiche Mann
Und sein Geld hat Mackie Messer
Dem man nichts beweisen kann
And Schmul Meier is missing
And many a rich man
And his money has Mack the Knife,
On whom they can't pin anything.

Jenny Towler ward gefunden
Mit 'nem Messer in der Brust
Und am Kai geht Mackie Messer,
Der von allem nichts gewußt
Jenny Towler was found
With a knife in her chest
And on the wharf walks Mack the Knife,
Who knows nothing about all this.

Und die minderjährige Witwe
Deren Namen jeder weiß
Wachte auf und war geschändet
Mackie welches war dein Preis?
And the minor-aged widow,
Whose name everyone knows,
Woke up and was violated
Mack, what was your price?

Refrain
Und die einen sind im Dunkeln
Und die anderen sind im Licht
Doch man sieht nur die im Lichte
Die im Dunklen sieht man nicht
And some are in the darkness
And the others in the light
But you only see those in the light
Those in the darkness you don't see

Doch man sieht nur die im Lichte
Die im Dunklen sieht man nicht
But you only see those in the light
Those in the darkness you don't see

Bobby Darin

Lyrics
Oh, the shark, babe, has such teeth, dear
And it shows them pearly white
Just a jackknife has old MacHeath, babe
And he keeps it, ah, out of sight
You know when that shark bites with his teeth, babe
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves, oh, wears old MacHeath, babe
So there's never, never a trace of red
Now on the sidewalk, huh, huh, whoo sunny morning, un huh
Lies a body just oozin' life, eek
And someone's sneakin' 'round the corner
Could that someone be Mack the Knife?
There's a tugboat, huh, huh, down by the river don'tcha know
Where a cement bag's just a-drooppin' on down
Oh, that cement is just, it's there for the weight, dear
Five'll get ya ten, old Macky's back in town
Now did ya hear 'bout Louie Miller? He disappeared, babe
After drawin' out all his hard-earned cash
And now MacHeath spends just like a sailor
Could it be our boy's done somethin' rash?
Now Jenny Diver, ho, ho, yeah, Sukey Tawdry
Ooh, Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Oh, the line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town
I said Jenny Diver, whoa, Sukey Tawdry
Look out to Miss Lotte Lenya and old Lucy Brown
Yes, that line forms on the right, babe
Now that Macky's back in town
Look out, old Macky's back

More like magnificent. Could ony work on this site I'd say.

So that's how to spell 'Sukey Tawdry ' - I often wondered. Even better - it gives me a precedent to inflict various foreign lyrics upon the membership. Stand by for French, Spanish, Yiddish and Scots Gaelic coming to you.

Milord

Edith Piaf Milord

Allez, venez, Milord! Come on my Lord!
Vous asseoir à ma table You sit at my table
Il fait si froid, dehors It's so cold outside
Ici c'est confortable Here it is comfortable
Laissez-vous faire, Milord Let yourself go, Milord
Et prenez bien vos aises And make yourself comfortable
Vos peines sur mon cœur Your sorrows on my heart
Et vos pieds sur une chaise And your feet on a chair
Je vous connais, Milord I know you, my lord
Vous n'm'avez jamais vue You have never seen me
Je n'suis qu'une fille du port I'm just a port girl
Qu'une ombre de la rue Just a shadow from the street

xxxx
Pourtant j'vous ai frôlé Yet I brushed against you
Quand vous passiez hier When you were passing yesterday
Vous n'étiez pas peu fier You were not proud
Dame! Lady!
Le ciel vous comblait The sky filled you
Votre foulard de soie Your silk scarf
Flottant sur vos épaules Floating on your shoulders
Vous aviez le beau rôle You had a good role
On aurait dit le roi He looked like the king
Vous marchiez en vainqueur You walked in victory
Au bras d'une demoiselle On the arm of a lady
Mon Dieu! My God!
Qu'elle était belle that she was beautiful
J'en ai froid dans le cœur I'm cold in the heart
-XXX

Allez, venez, Milord! Come on my Lord!
Vous asseoir à ma table You sit at my table
Il fait si froid, dehors It's so cold outside
Ici c'est confortable Here it is comfortable
Laissez-vous faire, Milord Let yourself go, Milord
Et prenez bien vos aises And make yourself comfortable
Vos peines sur mon cœur Your sorrows on my heart

Dire qu'il suffit parfois Say it's enough sometimes
Qu'il y ait un navire Let there be a ship
Pour que tout se déchire For everything to tear
Quand le navire s'en va When the ship leaves
Il emmenait avec lui He took with him
La douce aux yeux si tendres The sweet one with the tender eyes
Qui n'a pas su comprendre Who failed to understand
Qu'elle brisait votre vie That she was breaking your life
L'amour, ça fait pleurer Love makes you cry
Comme quoi l'existence How existence
Ça vous donne toutes les chances It gives you every chance
Pour les reprendre après To take them back later

XXX

Allez, venez, Milord! Come on my Lord!
Vous avez l'air d'un môme! You look like a kid!
Laissez-vous faire, Milord Let yourself go, Milord Come to my kingdom
Venez dans mon royaume Come to my kingdom
Je soigne les remords I treat remorse
Je chante la romance I sing romance
Je chante les milords I sing the milords
Qui n'ont pas eu de chance! Who were unlucky!
Regardez-moi, Milord Look at me, my lord
Vous n'm'avez jamais vue You have never seen me

XXX

Mais vous pleurez, Milord? But are you crying, Milord?
Ça j'l'aurais jamais cru That I would never have believed

Eh ben, voyons, Milord! Well, come on, Milord!
Souriez-moi, Milord! Smile at me, Milord!
Mieux qu'ça! Better than that!
Un p'tit effort A little effort
Voilà, c'est ça! There you have it!
Allez, riez, Milord! Come on, laugh, Milord!
Allez, chantez, Milord! Come on, sing, Milord!

I just looked up Suky Tawdry, and whilst thus occupied I find that Bertold Brecht (I think he was a bit of a lefty  ) also wrote the plays 'Mother Courage' and 'The Caucasian Chalk Circle' both of which I vaguely remember (the former with Dame Flora Robson) on early BBC TV. Doubt they'll ever be seen again there. Didn't understand them then and perhaps I woudn't even now. I guess they're on Youtube somewhere - but I only have about twenty hours a day for looking at stuff.

Here's another 'furrin' song sung by Placido Domingo, with a very handy built in translation. This not the version I like best ( and there are literally dozens) - that's by the Israeli singer Geula Gill (fantastic voice) - but it's good, with some very good accompanying pictures. I wonder if they came first - or the works of Sir William Russell Flint?

A bit judgmental, but If you don't like this - then you have no soul. . . . :extrawink:

Returning to songs in another language - I offer you

Brochan Lom in Scots Gaelic. I'd been listening to it for decades not having the faintest idea what it was about. Google and Spotify eventually changed all that. Remember Robin Hall and Jimmy McGregor from the 'Tonight' programme hosted by Cliff Michelmore?

You will need to join Spotify to get the full benefit - but it's free, and should be made compulsory thinks I.

Here's the full SP. Quite an anti climax. Wiki Brochan Lom

So did I.

It immediately put me in mind of Huxley's book "Doors of Perception".

I found that since I have a nasty case of "late onset assertiveness" (verging on cockiness with a tendency to flippancy) it was quite easy to dismiss it all as nonsense. Made easier by paying heed to Huxley's own quote - used recently on here. I guess he must have reached this conclusion long after writing the book.

“The course of every intellectual, if he pursues his journey long and unflinchingly enough, ends in the obvious, from which the non-intellectuals have never stirred.”

This is all way beyond me, but I'd like to say a big thank you to Stanley!! For days I have been suffering from a terrible earworm...the tune from an awful advert that goes " I sold my car to We Buy Any Car" repeated constantly. (Apologies if I've infected anyone's ears with that!) Now it's been replaced with "Since You've Been Gone." What a relief.
