Now for something completely different.
A bit of an aquired taste, and I think it's the only song I know which contains the word 'borborygmus'.
The video version didn't work on here but is available on Youtube - if you want the full horror of it all.

Ghost Train.

The words are quite clear on this studio version - he mentions Libba Cotten - the wonderful left handed blues guitar artist, also Odetta, and Eartha Kitt. He has good taste.

What is Life and Art Thou Troubled?

A bit serious for light listening. I knew she was from Preston but I've just discovered that in fact she was from Higher Walton.

"A bit serious for light listening."
Ideal for me David. Different people different strokes. It takes me back to the days when I listened to her singing in oratorio, sat there with my mother and the Ivor Novello bound score. We followed every note! It was a different world then....

Back to Bob Dylan -

I've seen these words described as "lyrical brilliance" - I wouldn't argue.

Far between sundown’s finish an’ midnight’s broken toll
We ducked inside the doorway, thunder crashing
As majestic bells of bolts struck shadows in the sounds
Seeming to be the chimes of freedom flashing

Flashing for the warriors whose strength is not to fight
Flashing for the refugees on the unarmed road of flight
An’ for each an’ ev’ry underdog soldier in the night
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

In the city’s melted furnace, unexpectedly we watched
With faces hidden while the walls were tightening
As the echo of the wedding bells before the blowin’ rain
Dissolved into the bells of the lightning
Tolling for the rebel, tolling for the rake
Tolling for the luckless, the abandoned an’ forsaked
Tolling for the outcast, burnin’ constantly at stake
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Through the mad mystic hammering of the wild ripping hail
The sky cracked its poems in naked wonder
That the clinging of the church bells blew far into the breeze
Leaving only bells of lightning and its thunder
Striking for the gentle, striking for the kind
Striking for the guardians and protectors of the mind
An’ the unpawned painter behind beyond his rightful time
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Through the wild cathedral evening the rain unraveled tales
For the disrobed faceless forms of no position
Tolling for the tongues with no place to bring their thoughts
All down in taken-for-granted situations
Tolling for the deaf an’ blind, tolling for the mute
Tolling for the mistreated, mateless mother, the mistitled prostitute
For the misdemeanor outlaw, chased an’ cheated by pursuit
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Even though a cloud’s white curtain in a far-off corner flashed
An’ the hypnotic splattered mist was slowly lifting
Electric light still struck like arrows, fired but for the ones
Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting
Tolling for the searching ones, on their speechless, seeking trail
For the lonesome-hearted lovers with too personal a tale
An’ for each unharmful, gentle soul misplaced inside a jail
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Starry-eyed an’ laughing as I recall when we were caught
Trapped by no track of hours for they hanged suspended
As we listened one last time an’ we watched with one last look
Spellbound an’ swallowed ’til the tolling ended
Tolling for the aching ones whose wounds cannot be nursed
For the countless confused, accused, misused, strung-out ones an’ worse
An’ for every hung-up person in the whole wide universe
An’ we gazed upon the chimes of freedom flashing

Thanks -I guessed you'd like that.

"Condemned to drift or else be kept from drifting" intrigued me for quite a while then I came across this from 2014 which puts it into real life - warning ! you are about to see the Daily Mail

- Kept from drifting

"Taking action: Farmer Chris Awdry, 53, took direct action when travellers took over his land and told him to take them to court - so he barricaded them in with his tractors and they asked to leave"

Almost poetic. . . .

I just been to Tenerife - (in my dreams) to cyber top up with Vitamin D from the sunshine.
Here is the scene today - from the town of La Orotava just a short way South Puerto de la Cruz in the North.
Did you ever see such an attractive colourful happy lot of people enjoying themselves - with plenty of booze and no bad behaviour? Look at the animals pulling the burger van - I wouldn't get too close.

Deleted due to not playing. It does for me though - the joys of computing.

Now from another age. . . .

PS before the item ! For some unknown reason this reminded me of Gunner Lofty Sugden (Don Estelle) from 'It Ain't Half Hot'. I think it featured in an episode. I also knew that he died in Rochdale, and is buried there. There are videos of his grave on Youtube - and I noticed there is a "typo" on his gravestone. Whoops
Don Estelle.jpg

Kashmiri song

Pale hands I loved beside the Shalimar,
Where are you now? Who lies beneath your spell?
Whom do you lead on Rapture's roadway, far,
Before you agonise them in farewell?

Oh, pale dispensers of my Joys and Pains,
Holding the doors of Heaven and of Hell,
How the hot blood rushed wildly through the veins
Beneath your touch, until you waved farewell.

Pale hands, pink tipped, like Lotus buds that float
On those cool waters where we used to dwell,
I would have rather felt you round my throat,
Crushing out life, than waving me farewell!

Wonderful, one of my favourites. If I remember rightly it was one of a suite of songs that were called the Indian Love Lyrics. LINK

I came onto the topic to post this, I tripped over Joyce and she is an old favourite of mine.

I needed something light hearted today so went back to Jez Lowe who I've admired for years. In fact I've seen him live twice. Not heard much of him lately - but this seems to be recent. It's just a bit rude - but very clever to us fans of the Geordie dialect.

PS the typo in Don Estelle's grave (not a good picture) if anyone is interested is 'formally' which should have been formerly'

Our Dan always used to say that she murdered a perfectly good written and performed by Prince Rogers Nelson song.

Sad that she has gone so young though.

I should add to that comment that Dan was a proper Prince fan. He had every single and album produced by him. We went to see him at Manchester when Dan was about 15. An amazing musician and performer. Nothing Compares 2 U was part of the repertoire on the night of course.

Here he is during the original creation of the song..
