Birros, in Colne, did a good job with the soles on my Birkenstock sandals, should last another couple of summers now. They have the Virbram material in big sheets and were able to replace them in one bit, this wasn't available a few years ago so I bought a new pair. I am considering getting the old pair done too (they're still in the bottom of the wardrobe) and getting some black leather dye for a 'proper' refurbishment.

Actually its the sound of the double beat of the two parts of the heart 'Drum-dum' or something like that. Lots of songs based on heartbeats. I think they all pre-date Kylie Minogue.

I saw this one in about 1960 live at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester. Count Basie and his Orchestra. I'm not really a 'big band ' fan - I preferred Acker Bilk at the same venue - and it seemed to go on for ever. Still does actually. I defy anyone to endure watch it in full.

I just got a tiny Bluetooth speaker, and miraculously got it to connect. I tested it with Spotify and went down an old play list. I reached Bob Dylan's album "Blood on the Tracks" - 'Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts'. I've heard it many a time, but now they put the lyrics below the recording. It was a revelation. Beats any drum solo I've ever seen. The guy's a genius I'd say, and some call this a masterpiece. I wouldn't argue. . More research needed. Chacun a son gout.

Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts
The festival was over, the boys were all plannin' for a fall
The cabaret was quiet except for the drillin' in the wall
The curfew had been lifted and the gamblin' wheel shut down

He was standin' in the doorway lookin' like the Jack of Hearts

He moved across the mirrored room, "Set it up for everyone," he said

There was no actor anywhere better than the Jack of Hearts

No one knew the circumstance but they say that it happened pretty quick
The door to the dressing room burst open and a Colt revolver clicked
And Big Jim was standin' there, ya couldn't say surprised
Rosemary right beside him, steady in her eyes
She was with Big Jim but she was leanin' to the Jack of Hearts

Two doors down the boys finally made it through the wall
And cleaned out the bank safe, it's said they got off with quite a haul
In the darkness by the riverbed they waited on the ground
For one more member who had business back in town
But they couldn't go no further without the Jack of Hearts

The next day was hangin' day, the sky was overcast and black
Big Jim lay covered up, killed by a penknife in the back
And Rosemary on the gallows, she didn't even blink
The hangin' judge was sober, he hadn't had a drink
The only person on the scene missin' was the Jack of Hearts

The cabaret was empty now, a sign said, "Closed for repair,"
Lily had already taken all of the dye out of her hair
She was thinkin' 'bout her father, who she very rarely saw
Thinkin' 'bout Rosemary and thinkin' about the law
But, most of all she was thinkin' 'bout the Jack of Hearts.
