Whilst we are on pianos - I came across this lady Dorothy Donegan, a long time ago whilst looking for Lonnie. There's lots from her on Youtube. I've seen her described as "the best pianist you never heard of", and she seems to have a sense of humour too. Brief 'walk on' part for President Clinton.

Actuall I prefer Woody Guthrie's take on the period and politics of the time.

I vaguely recall that we have discusssed Joe Hill before. It was so long ago and far away that it is impossible to get to the truth of the matter of his trial and execution. I seem to remember looking into it, and deciding that he probably did do the murder. and that you didn't totally disagree?

Paul Robeson - another charismatic, larger than life, badly treated black man, who could think for himself. Forerunner to Cassius Clay? Prodigious voice - remember Sanders of the River?

Bob made me read Wallace Stegner's book on Joe Hill, prior to that my main source was 'We shall be all' by Melvyn Dubovsky. Still not convinced either way but it's a good story and a good song.

I've just gone through most of this thread and enjoyed doing so. Interesting to see how it started and then developed. I was looking for the brass band thingy from Delph this year. I wanted to remind myself that fun could be had without organising a mass riot on Tik Tok and trying to steal stuff from Oxford Street, as has happened in London today. I found it eventually Delph if you want to watch it again.

Here's what they do in London for recreation. Oxford Street Tik Tok The people involved seem to have no fear of any consequences. Very depressing.

I have watched this recording many times now, and love it more each time. A film made about Lothersdale, just down the road from me, and narrated by Michael Parkinson. As Mrs Pickles says " I luv it up 'ere!"

I watched most of it - then at the end when the chap says "we don't want invading" - I got a 'deja vu' feeling.
