I have just had a call from Jean, Ken Whinney's (Plaques) wife. Sadly Ken passed away at 01:35 this morning after a short illness.
She has said he is now at peace.

That's the news I have been dreading hearing... I'm so sorry to hear it, I echo what David has just said. A good man and so well read. There was a lot more to Ken than met the eye....

Would this be the gentleman I took my laptop to a few years ago to be mended? He lived in Barnoldswick.

I think you may be thinking of Stephen Taylforth, Gloria. He is the most likely candidate for laptop fixing.

Stephen, very often referred to by his by-name, 'Pluggy', is still alive and well Gloria.

Ken's funeral is at Burnley Crematorium, March 7th at 11:30. Jean has requested family flowers only but, if anyone would like to make a donation to Pendleside Hospice, it would be appreciated.
There is a small wake after the service at Simply Classic, a small cafe on Shuttleworthmead Business Park in Padiham (near where the power station used to be).
I told Jean I would pass on any messages posted on here, she said Ken would have liked that.

I will try and attend the funeral. This is the photo that Ken sent for Stanley's 80th birthday celebrations.

Ken came upstairs in Colne Library to say hello to me. I remember him telling me that he was occasionally mistaken for Paul McCartney because of his floppy hair. He was making a collection of photographs of plaques on buildings in the area......hence the name Plaques.

Ken used to call in on me for a cup of tea and a chat when he came to his dentist which for some reason was in Barlick. He was always a welcome visitor and we had no problem whiling away a couple of hours. He was a great reader. I don't often lend books but very often sent Ken away with a couple of the rare ones.
I won't be going to the funeral, too upsetting for me.....

I never met him, but our paths crossed on various things on here. We aren’t around for his funeral, but will raise a glass to him.

The item on Len Dole is interesting. I'd not heard of him. and I'm pleased that I now have done.
Will we ever see his like again? I doubt it, and is there even a need for his sort of high principled activism. There certainly was a time when there was (tell me about it) - now, I'm not so sure. I love the idea of his ashes in the Clarion building. Splendid.
