See THIS BBC obituary for Henry Sandon aged 95. Possibly the nations favourite antiques expert.

I liked Henry Sandans little laugh and he always had a story to tell.

Glynis Johns has died aged 100. The obituaries are going on about her playing Mrs Banks in Mary Poppins but I remember her for two things, playing a mermaid in the eponymous film and singing a wonderful version of 'Bring On the Clowns'

I learned that Steve, my old wagon driving mate, who lived on Wellhouse Street (I never knew his surname) had died a week Last Tuesday. He had a very savage cancer that dragged him down quickly. It's a shock when you find out.....

I think this belongs here.

Tomorrow the 4th February 2024 is the 50th anniversary of the IRA M62 Percivals Coach bombing. I've seen no reference to it in the press. Let's see what tomorrow brings. It resonates with me, as I used the coach concerned many times. I was on one, when it caught fire at about 3.00am outside the RAF Fire Service depot at Catterick Bridge. That was handy, and it was quickly dealt with.

Full, and well recorded detail can be found here. M62 1974 Coach Bombing
M62_Coach_Bomb_1974_February_4A.jpg
I have Judith Ward's book "Ambushed", but had largely forgotten about the detail of it, and I can't put my hand on it at the moment. The wiki summary is very good. She served 17 years in prison for a crime she could not have committed. Notable that George Oldfield (Yorkshire Ripper) was the Detective in charge. Shades of the current Post Office scandal. Another notable name worth googling is the still active solicitor Gareth Pierce.

RIP.

I remember that well as I made regular journeys between Chester and Leeds around then. The black scorch marks remained on the hard shoulder for quite some time afterwards.

Funny thing is it doesn't ring a bell with me and I was using the M62 regularly in those days..... Memory is a fickle jade, we tend to trust it but many times it lets us down!

No mention of the event in the news which I am directed to see. It would of course not be helpful to mention the event on the day that the IRA achieved their aim, and to remind people that the 'armalite and the ballot box' had been successful.

I spoke to an Irish lady last month who told me that the aim of their current government is to double the population (currently 5 million) by means of immigration. She thought they were doing it too quickly.

I think we may hear more of this issue in coming years.
