Not a nationally known figure - except when someone wrote to the Times in praise of him - but well worth commemorating his passing. A legend in the village.

Tripps, thanks for the David Piggott article, I got a lot of enjoyment out of reading it. Being able to converse with Spanish and Italian passengers was a novelty - many of the station announcers don't even seem to speak English!

Roger Bannister has died..... Two little known facts about Roger. He was a good friend of Pendle Heritage because of his family connection to the building and the area. Even less known, he was a collector of bookmarks and I once pleased him by giving him one I happened to find in a secondhand shop and bought for pennies. It was one he hadn't got.

Tatty Bye Doddy. Ken Dodd aged 90.

Ken Dodd is another one of those who gave my parents enormous pleasure and has made me laugh heartily. Having spent 7 years in Liverpool, both as a student and also working in industry, I became very familiar with Liverpool humour. There must have been a local humour gene, or something `in the water', or humour waves radiating out of the ground! I note than Doddy married his partner, Anne, shortly before he died. I'll bet he left everything to her in his will and it gave him satisfaction to know that HMRC wouldn't get their hands on his money just yet!

For the man who once told 1500 jokes in three and a half hours, I've waited 50 years to use this...

Note re HMRC I am glad doddy did the right thing. It also resets the capital gains base values to date of death from memory, always handy that you still need to value estate even if no IHT due . one exception,certain types of life insurance bond are not iht but subject to income tax on the gain which is deemed to occur day before death. Depending on date of death in tax year amounts and number of years held this could be quite a large amount and if estate is charged to iht eg cash left to children, the even the net amount gets iht potential. And the govt seems to think estate values should be taxed in life too, I am sure they don't know the reality of things.

Julie, I agree. He seemed indestructible! What a brilliant mind and how much richer we all are. He said that he was working towards an understanding of the mind of God..... He'll be able to get the news direct now!

And he'll be able to swap jokes with Ken Dodd. I'm sure Doddy would find astrophysics a rich source of new comedy material! And Prof Hawking liked a good joke, especially if it was at the expense of scientists.

He's done well to get to 76 years of age having only been given 2 years to live when he was first diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease. Can't keep a good mind down and he will now be immortalised, (not that he needs any extra accolade) as the latest voice of "The Guide" in the ongoing Hexagonal Phase of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.

"The Theory of Everything" film of his early life starring Eddie Redmayne was already scheduled for transmission and will be shown on More4, next week I think.

I read the obituary in The Times on Saturday of Vice-Admiral Sir James Lamb Weatherall KCVO KBE (28 February 1936 – 18 March 2018). It was very interesting but I can't link it here because the online version paper requires a subscription. Similarly the Telegraph and I can't find an obit anywhere else.
Wikipedia says:
Educated at Gordonstoun School and the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, Weatherall joined the Royal Navy in 1954.[1] He was given command of the frigate HMS Andromeda in 1982, serving with her in the Falklands War, and took command of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in 1985.[1] He joined the staff of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe in 1987 and then became Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic in 1989 before retiring in 1991. In retirement he became Her Majesty's Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps until 2001 and a Trustee of the UK arm of the World Wide Fund for Nature. Weatherall also served as Warden of Box Hill School a Public School in Mickleham near Dorking in Surrey, England.

I can add from the obituary that he was commander on HMS Andromeda in the Falklands campaign and had the terrible experience of seeing an Exocet missile heading straight at his ship. He had his crew waiting with their Wolf sea-to-air missiles and hoping they could bring it down but it ran out of fuel and dropped into the sea a short distance from the ship. Andromeda was shielding the Invincible at the time. Later, Weatherall became captain of the Ark Royal and he took the ship to New York for the centenary celebration of the Statue of Liberty. His Harrier jets took off, hovered in a circle around the statue and then lowered their noses as a bow to `The Lady'.

The 'Crafty Cockney' Eric Bristow, professional darts player. A suspected heart attack at an exhibition in Liverpool, 60 years old is no age.
