The professor of nutrition who used to write regular articles for me was always of the view that in the 21st Century we shouldn't be giving `general' nutrition advice. He believed strongly that individuals differed greatly in their requirements and that advice should be tailored to each person. If we can only provide general advice to healthy people then I would suggest Sue's recommendation of a balanced diet (plus a little of what you fancy! )

Thanks Tiz, as Bobs Dr once said to him, don’t let your cholesterol problem spoil a good meal, enjoy it but perhaps not too often

Mind you, we are just hearing about a new study that says we shouldn't drink alchohol at all.....what a surprise!

"The key words are always balanced and quantity." Exactly Sue. That's my opinion as well and one of my ways of achieving balance is variety.
Maz, I have exactly the same routine. I have what is effectively a 12hour+ fast every night. When I was on the road full time I used to enjoy my fry-up breakfasts every morning around 9AM but never have breakfast now in spite of the 'experts' telling us that it's the most important meal of the day. Like you, my metabolism semms to function very well on my present regime of two meals a day.

You probably heard a news headline, Wendy, and we all know what they're like for garbling the truth! The study authors are saying there is no safe level of alcohol consumption but they're not saying we shouldn't drink alcohol (thank goodness!). LINK The BBC article gives some figures for alcohol content of drinks but there's more detail here (for anyone who likes fiddling with numbers!) LINK

I like the bit at the end of the BBC article...
Prof David Spiegelhalter, Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at the University of Cambridge, sounded a note of caution about the findings. "Given the pleasure presumably associated with moderate drinking, claiming there is no 'safe' level does not seem an argument for abstention," he said. "There is no safe level of driving, but the government does not recommend that people avoid driving. "Come to think of it, there is no safe level of living, but nobody would recommend abstention."

Prepared to give up almost anything ( even gave up smoking nearly 5 years ago because I saw the sense in that)... But you are going to have to really convince me that a couple of glasses of Red are doing me vital harm.
I see all these Chef/cooking shows on TV and I wonder who is eating all that wonderful food, because we are devoid of treats here. Who eats three courses any more ( we only eat "mains"). I think all these shows will die out because no one can eat all the goodies any more...
( but I shall persist with my glass of Red)

I'd like to know the statistical correlation between listening to Today on Radio Four in a morning and all cause mortality.

Life is a terminal disease and needs no help from R4 or anyone else. I always remember what an old Dales farmer said to me when we were castrating some piglets. He said "That bloke with the scythe is the best gelder of the lot. He never misses a stone...."

I'm virtually teetotal these days, it just happened, not a deliberate choice. If someone offered me a drink I'd happily take it and enjoy it rather than be a killjoy.

See THIS for the latest 'proposal' to ban the sale of high caffeine and sugar drinks to young people. Will it actually happen? Why was the sale of them allowed in the first place? Can the might of the big food companies get away with anything?

I always get a little annoyed when I see the banks of machines in our local sports centre selling 'sports drinks, a euphemism for high sugar / caffeine crap which only kids seem to buy but adults seldom do. I know you can use the personal choice argument but their is also a psychological twist to this in that if adult sports people drink it its OK for kids. Our council should be pushing to get rid of these machines especially when a cafe is available.

A lot of adults drink the high-caff products too, Plaques. The number of empty cans dropped into wall cavities on building sites testifies to the number of builders drinking them, and all the cans in hedges and on grass verges results from the van drivers and some car drivers too. They become addicted as kids and carry it on into adult years. No wonder we see so much aggression now.

I've noted the same thing Tiz, on my early morning litter picking the cans are almost always 'energy drinks', I get the impression that many school kids have them for breakfast. Amazing how many of them are in the supermarket on the way to school spending money given to them by their mothers as a substitute for a proper breakfast. I leave you to imagine what an attractive breakfast looks like at that age.
I think us crumblies were reared in a saner world!

I've never believed the `probiotics` story, the science didn't stack up and it's a case of food ingredients companies making profits by elaborating and eagerly promoting some early scientific reports...

I have noticed that since the science was first exposed, the firms promoting the probiotics only claim that they are 'proven to reach the gut intact'. No claims about what happens when they get there. The real probiotic treatment that has been proven to work is of course the faecal transplant. That way the beneficial bacteria are't exposed to the powerful action of the digestive juices. Anyone for a DIY enema?

Although there have been positive results with faecal transplants some have gone seriously wrong. (I'm tempted to use the word back-fired but I won't.) The recipient may react badly and end up much worse than before the transplant, so it's a case of Russian roulette at the moment.
