I am sat here trying to think of another......... It's hard but here's what I have come up with.

Image

This building opposite Bancroft Shed was once a tannery but is now the smallholding built up by the Demaine family over the years. So that isn't the question.
It's dead simple and might be too obvious but look carefully at the wall on this side of the buildings. Why did the builders make holes in the bottom of it? (I know, a bit pathetic!)

To let rain water flow off the road and thus prevent flooding - and perhaps the water was directed into the tannery vats?

I thought of that but wouldn't it run off through the adjacent gate opening?

You've got it Tiz..... The dip is prone to flooding if the culvert under the field is restricted in any way. There's a culvert under the road that carried the overflow from the dam when it was in place. The beck continues from the culvert and any water on the road drops straight into it.

You're so close I have to give it to you China. It's one of the reciprocating pumps that were fitted to the large aquarium oiler reservoirs on the engine shafts, driven by ropes on the shaft they recirculate the lubricating oil after it has drained from the bearing. The reason why this one is special is that it is brand new and was given to me by John Kirkham at Bolton when they shut down their business because of lack of demand. They specialised in making lubricators for steam engines and other large pieces of machinery like hydraulic presses and compressors. They were making their products to too high a standard and couldn't compete on price.
