BALDWIN INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 29 September 2005

Baldwin and heap were manufacturers of industrial hoists [teagles] in Burnley in late 19th and early 20th century.

c.1542
[From ‘Martons Both’ by David Nelson, page 10.] Ingthorpe Grange was a monastic grange of the priors of Bolton Abbey. Henry Clifford [Henry Clifford, 1st Earl of Cumberland (1493-1542)] bought it at the Dissolution in 1542. He leased it to Anthony Baldwin and his mother, the sitting tenants, on a 300 year lease with an option to renew for another 300 years. Around 1600 the Cliffords sold Ingthorpe to William Baldwin. Hugh and Barbara Baldwin rebuilt the grange in 1672. John Barton Baldwin [b. 1796] sold Ingthorpe to his cousin, Richard Roundell in about 1830. [Roundell was owner of the Gledstone Estate which passed eventually to Sir Amos Nelson]

[SCG note: Ingthorpe is mentioned in Early Yorkshire Charters [244] as ‘Ingerthorpe, mentioned in the Rimington Fee. 3. 1834 Pigot notes F J Lace as living at Ingthorpe. In Domesday Martum [Marton] is recorded with six carucates and Ventorp with two. Martum is believed to derive from mereton [Mer=marshy place. Ton=settlement]. The name Ventorp evolved through Unktorp, Crane-End, Crake-End to Ingthorpe. After the Conquest Roger de Poitou was the overlord and he gave the tenancy to Pagamus who was thus the first Lord of the Manor and had a moated house near the site of the church. The family evolved over the next 500 years into the de Marton family.
