Dead right. It's a sheherd's whistle. I always have one in my pocket and remember once being in London and using it to attract the attention of a cabby. The locals were impressed!
Next one anyone?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Is it for fixing vertically at the bottom of a door? You can use your foot on the bit that juts out.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
First part yes China but the extra bits aren't for foot operation. There is another reason......

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Does the extra bit that juts out activate a secondary locking mechanism or a "occupied-vacant" sign ??

Tom, you are getting very close with the first suggestion but you're not there yet.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
The sticking out bit has to be pressed down to deactivate the locking system?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
It's for double doors and the extra bit is to keep the second door shut. I notice the casing has at least one recess that could keep the bolt in the raised position until it's freed by pressing inwards.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Structure of wood?
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Another thought: anything to do with graphene, especially fluorinated graphene structures?
Brane Theory. Schwarzite carbon. Graphene. We do get about don't we when the answer will probably be something simple like Gouda cheese structure!

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
None of the above are correct but...
That, and Cathy's honeycomb, are close to the first part of the solution. For now, keep thinking about foodstuffs...
