MYSTERY OBJECTS
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I don't think it is either a proof mark, nor a hallmark, which were my original thoughts. So I'm at a loss ...

Does it relate to a place eg. The Lion for Edinburgh?
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here.
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Pewter? Tankards come to mind. Is it a trade stamp to certify the capacity of a tankard? A weights and measures stamp?
Is that what Stoneroad has already suggested with proof mark?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Liz has got it, it's a pewter tankard by Warric and what I was after was the technical term for what on other things would be a hallmark. On Pewter they are usually described as touch marks.

Is it for tapping both Christmas Elves and Carol Singers on the head?
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Is it a forming dolly which would sit in a blacksmiths anvil? Not sure if the term dolly is right.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I was thinking more on the lines of a sheet metal former to fit into a swage block rather than an anvil.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Gloria got it first and it could be used in a swage block I suppose. Now a supplementary question. If used in the anvil, what's the name of the hole it sits in?
Just for interest, the anvil is 28lbs and ex-WD Useful thing to have about!

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
At 28 lbs it can almost be classed as a pocket anvil.

Why is it called a `hardie hole'?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Liz got it right. I've always assumed it was named after a smith called Hardy.... (LINK)

Come to think, here's a supplementary.... Name the essential tool present in every forge that is massive but invisible.

Sorry China but no. The essential item I am thinking about can't be seen, it's invisible unless you know where to look.
