Then think of 'unknown unknowns' that has to go into the algorithm for driverless cars.

Patiently waiting for an MRI scan but the PC needed to run it won't wake up, apparently they need to wait for permission to turn it off and back on again. Quality IT support there
10:30 UPDATE MRI is broken, back home now.

Never had one there Kev, will you get an urgent re booking when it's back up or can they send you somewhere else?

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Interestingly been looking at some YT computer monitor ? repair vid. Three types of diode on the board and one at least had exploded/fallen apart, Hitachi Made I think, 30 years old, were rated to 600v at various wattages, not certain what caused the death as normally another feed in might have run faulty. Interesting.
Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
If you find your screen display has gone horizontal and not vertical, your mouse is rebellious, and you've checked all the connections, then changed the mouse, then changed the leads, then changed the monitor, then rotated the screen by 90 degrees and asked Google what's wrong - one handed, whilst cradling the monitor - you will find that if instead of pressing CTRL ALT Delete you have pressed CTRL ALT Up Arrow that's what will happen.
Do the same again and all will be well. Try and do it earlier than midnight though.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
We used to do tricks like that when we were working nights to make our manager's life a misery! One night I deleted a spreadsheet that I didn't use. Unfortunately it deleted the only copy that lots of others used. Because I cleared the trash regularly It meant it had to be reloaded from the security disk that was made each day. Apparently there was only one master copy of the spreadsheet no matter how many users had access to it. Of course that makes perfect sense when you think about it. I wasn't popular that day!

There is also a function key sequence, the other was is through settings screen display notebook (tablet) compatibility. Normally triggered by the cat walking across the keyboard. Always handy to have a smartphone to check the internet for the exact sequence for your model and software release - I understand a Windows10 update is due sometime to improve the user experience and interface so expect to re-learn all steps for anything again.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Kev, I didn't know that. The only experience I have had that compares is getting my first Amstrad computer and not being able to get it to do anything. It took quite a while to find the brightness and contrast knobs on the monitor were delivered set to their lowest value. Turning them up changed my life.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Firefox has just updated itself and the tabs have now lost their borders by default, not sure whether I like that, doesn't look quite right.
Ian
Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Your active tab (the tab you are using) has a border so that you can tell it from other tabs if you have several tabs open at once, like I often have. Personally I prefer the previous version but there isn't much difference.

They updated Firefox and Thunderbird at the same time. Both have a cleaner look.

I read that - and didn't get what the fuss was about. It looked OK to me.
That's because it hadn't up dated.
Well it has now and I don't like it either.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
My phone is on the 'naughty step' The battery has swollen up and it's trying to escape from its case, causing the start switch to malfunction. There's no heat in it, but the fire risk is a worry so it's been dismantled and isolated. A new one (battery not phone) has been ordered and should be here by Wednesday.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Best course of action that David. Even a "spent" flat lithium cell can dump quite a few amps if shorted. I changed the battery in Sally's previous tablet which was quite a big unit in a 7" tablet. I managed to take the end off a screwdriver while coaxing it from its sticky back fixing I should have been using plastic tooling so it was my own fault. That was from a battery that wouldn't hold its charge.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Is there a 'normal' life span for a Lithium battery?

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
In the main and with normal duty cycles lithium batteries tend to outlast the technology they are powering. Unless of course you are like most of the one Guy members who hang on to tech items, long past their design life. One major advantage is that they don't suffer memory retention problems as previous rechargeable types used to. Ideal for random charge cycles as in mobile phones and the like.

Re: COMPUTERS, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY
Very wounding comment.
I have a calculator, used occasionally, which I bought in 1986. Driven by a small solar panel, so never needs a new battery. I think that may be a record - unless someone can better it.
