PARKINSON INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 05 October 2006

1753
Edmund Parkinson paid land tax of 4s/4d in 1753. No address specified. Paid 8/8 in 1756 and 1757. 1760 8/8 land tax paid by ‘Widow Parkinson’.

1753
Joseph Parkinson paid 6s/5d land tax for ‘New House’ (Bracewell?). 1760 he paid 13/4 and in 1770 4/6 no address.

1753
Josias[sic] Parkinson paid 3s/4d land tax for ‘Clough’. 1756 paid 6/8 for same property. 1760 paid 6/- no name specified. Same Josias paid 4/4 land tax for ‘Tom Spencer Ground’ in 1753. 1756/57 and 60 paid 8/- no address mentioned but probably same holding.

1757
Mr Parkinson paid land tax of 7s/4d for Mill Close. Seems to have been associated in this with James Pollard. Sale in same year?

1796
In an indenture dated 18th July 1796 John Broughton of Moses Lee in Barlick and John Broughton of Thornton, stonemason are bound to pay £80 to Richard Parkinson of Calf Hall, Barnoldswick, Surveyor of Highways being for the upkeep of Damhead Bridge in Barlick for seven years.

Joseph Parkinson mentioned as weaver in an electoral roll of Barnoldswick for 1807.

1837
Robert Parkinson noted as an elector of Brogden, address given is the Moorcock Inn.

1851 census
John Parkinson, Townhead, Barnoldswick, 39, PLW cotton. Elizabeth, wife, 38, HLW wool. Henry, son, 13, HLW wool. Elizabeth, daughter, 10. Mary A.[Ann?], daughter, 2.

1871 census
John Parkinson, King Street, Barnoldswick. 53, joiner, cabinet maker and glazier.

1885
Craven Herald report 24/05/1935. Early in 1885 Mr Gill bought a plot of land in Ireland meadow, Earby and built Grove Shed on the site. The first tenants were James Clegg and Henry Parkinson who started with 300 looms each.

1919
LTP. 78/AG/07, page 15. Newton Pickles relates how Leonard Parkinson and Jimmy Moseley dismantled a Hick Hargreaves engine at Bolton and shipped it by canal to Barnoldswick where it was installed by them in the new engine house built by Blakey’s at Coates New Mill, Barnoldswick. They were fitters working for Henry Brown and Sons. Leonard had worked with Johnny Pickles at H Brown and Sons since 1914. Later, when Johnny started his own firm, and his foreman Stanley Fisher left to run the engine at Moss Shed Leonard was made foreman.

LTP. 78/AC/01. Page 9. Ernie Roberts talks about a Mrs Parkinson who lived near John Street in Barlick who used to send him to the shop to buy donkey stones.
