There are a LOT of Broughton's in Barnoldswick and Thornton at this particular time and I am inclined to think that the "John of Barnoldswick" is a different John to your "John of Upflats" but I may be wrong. Upflats is a part of Barnoldswick.

The librarians tell me there was no 1831 census for Barnoldswick and the 1841 census is very sparse with the details - it only lists who is in each household and whether they were born in the county or not, along with age and occupation. It was only on the next census that relationships to the head of the family were put in along with actual towns of birth.
I couldn't find any records for John or Mary's birth at all and wondered if they were possibly baptised at St Michael's in Bracewell rather than at Ghyll Church.

Jepp Hill runs between the end of King St and Church Street. The Former Town Hall is on Jepp Hill. Cross Keys Public House on the left at the bottom.

Funny how things catch your eye. I read this post and it struck me that I have no idea where the name 'Jepp' comes from.....

Thanks Nigel - the two spellings threw me. My ancestors were William & Betty Boothman who lived at 67 Gep Hill in 1851 and then in Church Street in 1861 and 1871. The were 'grocers and ironmongers' so presumably lived above the shop there. It may even have been the same place - on the corner of Gep Hill and Church Street and falling under one address in 1841 and the other thereafter.

I do not know Barnoldswick (although I think I may have visited as a child) so it is amazing to be able to use Goggle Street view to wander around there and see where they lived. I'll bet the cobbles in Jepp Hill are the same ones they walked on!
